Step 1 — Note what the thermostat displays when 540 appears. Does it say “outdoor unit” or “indoor unit” is not communicating? This tells you where to start.

Step 2 — Check power to all components. Furnace powered on, outdoor unit breaker on and disconnect closed.

Step 3 — Visually inspect all communication wire connections. Tighten any loose screws. Look for corrosion on terminals.
