Kenmore Dryer Squeaking — What’s Happening

A squeaking or squealing noise from your Kenmore dryer is a mechanical symptom, not an error code. The noise typically comes from friction in a rotating part inside the drum drive system, most often the idler pulley, drum support rollers, or the drive belt itself.

Because Kenmore dryers share design with Whirlpool-family models, the squeak points to normal wear in the belt-and-drum assembly. Parts like the idler pulley bearing or drum roller bearings dry out or develop flat spots over time, producing a high-pitched squeal during tumbling.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer completely or turn off both 30 A breakers at the panel to disconnect all power before opening the cabinet.
  2. Remove the dryer’s top panel (usually held by clips or screws) and then the front panel to expose the drum, belt, and drive components.
  3. Manually rotate the drum by hand and listen for the location of the squeak to isolate whether it comes from the front, rear, or belt path.
  4. Inspect the idler pulley by spinning it by hand with the belt tension released. It should rotate freely and silently without roughness or squealing.
  5. Check each drum support roller and shaft for flat spots, rough rotation, or visible wear by spinning them manually.
  6. Examine the drive belt for cracks, fraying, glazing, or shiny wear marks on the pulley contact surfaces.
  7. If the idler pulley, rollers, or belt show wear, replace all three together as a maintenance kit to prevent repeated service calls.
  8. Clean lint and debris from the drum housing and reassemble the panels, then run a test cycle to confirm the squeak is gone.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are not comfortable working inside the dryer cabinet or if the squeak persists after replacing the idler pulley, rollers, and belt. A tech can also diagnose motor bearing problems or drum bearing issues that require more disassembly. If your dryer is still under warranty or a service plan, contact Kenmore or your retailer before opening the cabinet yourself.
