Kenmore Dryer F71 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F71 means the main control board can't talk to the user interface board. Most often fixed by resetting power or replacing a board.

Kenmore Dryer F71 Error Code — What It Means

F71 is a control-communication fault. The dryer’s main control board is not communicating properly with the user interface board or another electronic component inside the machine. This is not a vent blockage or sensor problem. It’s an internal electronics issue.

Whirlpool (the manufacturer behind many Kenmore dryers) tells owners to power down at the breaker for 5 minutes, restore power, start a Time Dry cycle, and watch for the code to return. If it clears, the fault was temporary. If it comes back, you’re looking at a wiring or board replacement job.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker (not just the dryer switch) and leave it off for a full 5 minutes to clear the control memory.
  2. Restore power and start a Time Dry cycle. Watch the display for about 1 minute to see if F71 returns.
  3. If the code clears, the fault was likely temporary (power glitch or static). Run a load and monitor for recurrence.
  4. If the code returns, kill power again, remove the control panel or rear access cover, and inspect the wiring harness between the main control board and the user interface board for loose connectors, damaged pins, or burn marks.
  5. Check the incoming power supply at the dryer terminal block to confirm stable voltage (around 220 volts across the two outer power wires) and that the cord connections are tight.
  6. If wiring and power are good, the next step is to replace the failed control board. Start with the main control board if the UI is responding to button presses, or replace the UI board if buttons are unresponsive or the display is erratic.
  7. If you see visible corrosion, moisture damage, or burnt components, replace the damaged boards rather than attempting further troubleshooting.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Main control board / electronic control board (ECB)Amazon | Replaces the main logic board that communicates with the user interface.
User interface control board (UICB) / UI boardAmazon | Replaces the sub-board behind the display and buttons.
Wiring harness / interconnect harnessAmazon | If the connector or wiring between boards is damaged, order the harness assembly.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you’re not comfortable working with 220-volt appliances or if the reset does not clear the code and you see no obvious loose wires. Board replacement on dryers requires removing control panels and handling static-sensitive electronics. If you see any burnt, corroded, or moisture-damaged components inside the control area, stop and call for service rather than replacing boards blindly. A qualified tech can test the communication path, confirm which board has failed, and source the correct part for your exact Kenmore model number.
