Hyster Forklift Fault Codes - Quick Reference
Hyster forklifts (J-Series, H-Series, E-Series electric, and pneumatic IC models) display fault codes on the operator display or via the Hyster PC Service Tool diagnostic software.
| Code | System | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Drive | Motor overtemperature | Reduce load, cool down |
| 02 | Drive | Drive motor current fault | Check motor and wiring |
| 03 | Hydraulic | Lift motor overtemperature | Reduce lift cycles |
| 04 | Battery | Low battery voltage | Recharge battery |
| 05 | Steer | Steer sensor fault | Check sensor and wiring |
| 06 | Brake | Brake fault | Check brake system |
| 07 | System | Controller communication fault | Cycle power, check wiring |
| 08 | Engine | Engine fault (IC models) | Check engine diagnostics |
| 09 | System | Main controller fault | Connect PC service tool |
| 10 | Hydraulic | Hydraulic pressure fault | Check pump and relief valve |
Most Common Faults
01 - Drive Motor Overtemperature
Hyster electric forklifts monitor drive motor temperature via thermistors or thermal cutouts. Overheat occurs from sustained operation at high current - inclines, heavy loads, or frequent acceleration. Allow the motor to cool (key off, 20+ minutes) and check motor ventilation. If faults recur, the thermal sensor, motor brushes, or commutator may need attention.
04 - Low Battery Voltage
Deep discharge faults indicate the battery voltage dropped below the Hyster truck’s protection setpoint. This protects flooded lead-acid cells from sulfation. Charge immediately to 100%. Check the specific gravity of all cells in the battery - low cells that don’t recover with charging indicate cell failure.
07 - Controller Communication Fault
Hyster forklifts use CAN bus communication between the main controller, display, and subsystem controllers. A CAN fault is usually caused by a damaged CAN bus cable, corroded connector, or a failed module. Inspect the CAN bus harness routing - forklift harnesses are vulnerable to chafing from mast and overhead guard movement.
06 - Brake Fault
Hyster electric forklifts use electromagnetic parking brakes. A brake fault can mean: brake not releasing on travel command, brake not applying on stop, or brake monitoring circuit fault. Check the brake coil resistance and measure voltage at the brake connector during operation.
