GE Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve Replacement — What This Part Does

The water inlet valve assembly supplies household water to the ice maker and water dispenser in your GE refrigerator. The valve sits at the rear or lower rear of the unit and includes a solenoid coil that energizes when the dispenser paddle is pressed or the ice maker calls for water. When voltage is applied, the coil opens a spring-loaded diaphragm to let water flow. When the signal stops, the spring closes the valve.

The valve fails when the solenoid coil loses continuity (normal coil resistance is 100 to 500 ohms), when mineral deposits or debris mechanically jam the internal mechanism, or when the diaphragm cracks and leaks. A failed valve either stays shut (no water) or leaks and drips continuously. Because GE uses model-specific assemblies with different connector layouts and mounting brackets, you must match the replacement valve to your model number.

How to Replace It

1. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet and shut off the household water supply valve behind or beneath the unit.
2. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall to access the rear panel or lower rear compressor compartment cover.
3. Remove the rear access panel screws and lift the panel off to expose the water inlet valve assembly mounted at the lower rear corner.
4. Disconnect the electrical harness from the valve solenoid by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight off.
5. Use an adjustable wrench or quick-disconnect tool to detach the incoming water supply line and the internal outlet tubes from the valve fittings (have a towel ready for residual water).
6. Remove the mounting bracket screw or retaining clip and lift the old valve assembly out of its bracket.
7. Position the new valve assembly in the mounting bracket and secure it with the screw or clip exactly as the original was fastened.
8. Push the inlet supply line and outlet tubes firmly onto the new valve fittings until they seat completely and lock (compression fittings should be tightened hand-tight plus one quarter turn).
9. Reconnect the electrical harness to the valve solenoid until the connector clicks into place.
10. Reinstall the rear access panel, turn on the household water supply, and inspect all fittings for leaks while the valve is under pressure.
11. Plug the refrigerator back in, press the dispenser paddle for 30 seconds to purge air, and initiate an ice maker test cycle to verify fill and check for drips.
