GE Refrigerator dS Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

dS means the control reads a door as open when it is shut, or the reverse. The common fix is replacing a failed door switch.

GE Refrigerator dS Error Code — What It Means

dS tells you the door sensing circuit disagrees with reality. The control thinks a door is open while it is closed, or it shows closed while you have it open.

A stuck or failed door switch is the usual cause. The same fault can leave interior lights on and run the cooling system harder than it should.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Open and close each door and watch whether the interior light responds.
  2. Press the door switch plunger by hand and listen for a clean click.
  3. Unplug the unit and test the switch for continuity in both positions.
  4. Replace the switch if it does not change state when pressed.
  5. Check the door alignment and adjust the hinges if the door sags.
  6. Inspect the switch wiring plug for a tight, clean connection.
  7. Restore power and confirm the code clears with the door closed.

When to Call a Pro

If a new switch tests good but dS stays, the board input that reads the door may have failed. A technician can confirm the input signal before you replace the control board.
