GE Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement — What This Part Does
The water filter cartridge removes contaminants from your water supply before it reaches the dispenser and ice maker. On GE models using the XWFE filter, the cartridge also includes Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology and an RFID sensor that tracks filter life and communicates with the refrigerator’s control board. When the filter reaches 0% life or is not recognized, the control board may disable the water valve and lock out dispensing until you install a new filter or the RFID bypass plug.
Filters expire after roughly six months of normal use or when sediment and debris clog the media inside. A dry or improperly seated filter during installation can also trigger an ERR fault on XWFE systems, deactivating the dispenser entirely. GE designed the RFID system to prevent unfiltered water from being dispensed once the cartridge has expired, so you get either a reminder light or a complete lockout depending on your model.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Orange or red filter status light on the control panel Orange means the filter should be replaced soon and red means it should be replaced now or water flow has decreased.
- ERR displayed on the dispenser screen and no water or ice dispensing The RFID system did not recognize the filter or detected improper installation, so the water valve is deactivated.
- Water or ice tastes bad or has an odor The filter media is saturated and no longer removing contaminants from the supply line.
- Slow water flow from the dispenser Internal sediment has clogged the filter cartridge and restricted flow through the media.
- Filter life indicator shows 0% remaining The control board has counted down the filter’s service life and is signaling that replacement is due.
- Filter light does not reset after you press the reset pad The filter may not be fully seated or locked in the housing, or the RFID sensor is not reading the new cartridge.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the dedicated breaker at your electrical panel to kill power before you begin.
- Turn off the household water supply valve feeding the refrigerator line to prevent leaks during removal.
- Locate your model and serial number plate inside the fresh-food compartment or on the left wall and verify which filter part number your refrigerator requires (XWFE, XWF, or other).
- Open the fresh-food door and rotate the old filter cartridge counterclockwise a quarter turn, then pull it straight out of the filter housing in the upper-right corner.
- Fill the new filter cartridge with water from your tap to prime the media and prevent air pockets, especially on XWFE systems where GE specifies pre-filling.
- Insert the new filter straight into the housing with the arrow or label facing up, then rotate it clockwise a quarter turn until it locks into place and you feel firm resistance.
- Turn the household water supply back on and check the filter housing and line connections for any drips or leaks.
- Restore power to the refrigerator and press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad on the control panel until the red light turns off or the display shows 100% filter life.
- Dispense two to three gallons of water through the door dispenser to flush the new cartridge and clear any trapped air or carbon fines from the system.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| GE XWFE refrigerator water filter | Amazon | Supersedes XWF and includes Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology. Check your model number on the serial plate to confirm XWFE compatibility. |
| GE XWF refrigerator water filter | Amazon | Older filter design that remains compatible with many GE models. Verify your refrigerator’s filter part number on the existing cartridge or in the owner’s manual. |
| GE RFID bypass plug WR17X33825 | Amazon | Required if you want to operate the refrigerator without a filter installed on XWFE-equipped models. Plugs into the filter housing to restore water valve operation. |

When to Call a Pro
If the ERR fault and dispenser lockout persist after you have removed and reinstalled a known-good XWFE filter and performed the reset procedure, the RFID sensor assembly or main control board may have failed. A technician will test the RFID circuit and verify that the water valve responds to the control board’s signals. If you see water leaking from behind the filter housing or around the supply line fittings after replacement, call a pro to inspect the housing seal and compression connections before water damage spreads inside the cabinet.
