GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly Replacement — What This Part Does

The ice maker assembly is a complete mechanism that fills, freezes, and ejects ice cubes into the bucket inside your freezer. It includes the mold, harvest motor, fill valve connection, and control module in one unit. GE refrigerators use either a factory-installed ice maker or an add-on kit for models that shipped without one.

Most failures happen when the internal motor or module wears out and stops the harvest cycle. Mechanical jams from ice buildup or water-supply problems can also kill the unit. GE sells complete replacement assemblies because internal service parts for the mechanism are not available for typical field repairs.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker supplying power to the unit.
  2. Turn off the water supply valve behind or under the refrigerator to stop flow to the ice maker.
  3. Open the freezer door and pull out the ice bin or bucket to expose the ice maker assembly.
  4. Remove any plastic cover or shroud over the ice maker by lifting or unscrewing the retaining tabs.
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness plug from the back or side of the ice maker assembly.
  6. Remove the mounting screws that hold the ice maker to the freezer liner or bracket (typically two or three screws).
  7. Lift the old ice maker out and inspect the fill tube and water supply connection for clogs or damage.
  8. Position the new ice maker assembly on the mounting points, reconnect the wiring harness, and secure it with the original screws or the hardware included in your kit.
  9. Set the ice maker power or shutoff arm to the ON position, reinstall the bin and cover, restore water and electrical power, and wait 24 hours for the first harvest cycle to complete.

The Part You Need

Use that number to match the correct assembly. WR30X10093 is a common kit for GE models that did not originally come with an ice maker. WR49X31524 is a replacement assembly for some GE, Hotpoint, RCA, Sears, and Kenmore models. Confirm fitment before ordering.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with both electrical connections and water-supply plumbing at the same time, or if the new ice maker still does not produce ice after installation. A pro can verify that the water inlet valve, fill tube, and control board signals are all correct. If your refrigerator was not originally equipped with an ice maker, a technician can confirm that the correct add-on kit and all required installation hardware are present before you begin.
