GE Gas Dryer Flame Sensor Replacement — What This Part Does
The flame sensor (also called radiant flame sensor) is a safety and ignition control switch mounted on your GE gas dryer’s burner assembly. It proves that the burner area has reached the correct heat conditions and works in sequence with the igniter and gas valve so the burner lights only when intended. When the sensor fails, the dryer cannot verify flame or heat properly, so ignition is interrupted or prevented.
The sensor fails most often due to worn-out internal contacts or element wear that causes loss of electrical continuity. Burned, damaged, or loose wire connections at the sensor terminals also cause problems. Because the sensor sits directly on the burner housing, it can be misdiagnosed when other burner components (igniter, gas valve coils, or thermostats) are actually at fault.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dryer won’t heat at all The burner never lights and clothes stay cold or damp after a full cycle.
- Igniter glows orange but burner won’t light You see the igniter glowing through the access panel but the gas valve never opens and no flame appears.
- Intermittent or cycling heat The dryer heats for a few minutes, stops, then may or may not heat again during the same cycle.
- No continuity across sensor terminals When you isolate one lead and test with an ohmmeter, you get no reading or infinite resistance instead of approximately 0 ohms.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and turn off the gas supply valve on the line feeding the dryer.
- Pull the dryer forward from the wall so you can access the rear or lower front access panels.
- Remove the screws holding the access panel and lift the panel away to expose the burner assembly.
- Locate the flame sensor mounted on the burner housing (a small metal or ceramic component with two wire terminals).
- Disconnect both wire leads from the flame sensor terminals and label them if needed.
- Remove the mounting screw(s) securing the flame sensor to the burner housing and lift the old sensor free.
- Position the new flame sensor on the burner housing in the same orientation and secure it with the mounting screw(s).
- Reconnect both wire leads to the new sensor terminals (polarity typically does not matter for this part).
- Reinstall the access panel and secure it with screws, then slide the dryer back into position.
- Turn on the gas supply valve, plug the dryer back in, and run a timed dry cycle to verify the burner lights and heats normally.

When to Call a Pro
If you are not comfortable working around gas appliances, call a technician. Any work involving the burner assembly, gas valve, igniter, or flame sensor should be done by a qualified appliance repair professional if you are unsure. Also call a pro if the new sensor does not fix the problem, since a no-heat condition can be caused by failed igniters, gas valve coils, thermal fuses, or control board faults that require further diagnosis and safe handling of gas connections. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
