Frigidaire Refrigerator Running Constantly - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Dirty condenser coils or a stuck condenser fan motor usually cause constant running. Clean the coils and verify fan operation.

Frigidaire Refrigerator Running Constantly — What’s Happening

A Frigidaire refrigerator that runs constantly is usually not a fault code. Many Frigidaire French-door models use variable-speed compressors that may run continuously except during defrost to hold temperature efficiently. Frigidaire’s own guidance says frequent or even continuous compressor operation can be normal, especially on variable-speed models, and runtime increases with door openings, warm ambient conditions, and restricted airflow.

If the cabinet is getting warm, the issue is usually a cooling-performance problem, not a “run constantly” error code. When the refrigerator is also warm, Frigidaire treats that as a high-temperature condition rather than a runtime fault. The high-temp alarm can be triggered by an open door, incorrect temperature setting, or poor door seal.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm whether continuous running is actually abnormal by checking the model type, current cabinet temperatures, ambient temperature, and recent door-open history.
  2. Check for alarms or error indications and reset alerts if present by unplugging for one minute or using CLEAR ALERTS on supported models.
  3. Pull the unit out and inspect condenser airflow first by verifying the vent cover and coils are clean, wall clearance is adequate, and the condenser fan runs when the compressor operates.
  4. Verify evaporator airflow by checking whether the evaporator fan runs and whether frost buildup is blocking the evaporator or air passages.
  5. Check the damper between freezer and fresh-food compartments for being stuck closed or iced over.
  6. Test the defrost system if frost is present by checking the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost control or timer.
  7. Measure the thermistor if control behavior is suspect by disconnecting it and checking resistance (a Frigidaire thermistor typically reads around 27,000 to 32,000 ohms, and an open reading or large deviation indicates a bad sensor).
  8. Assess the start relay and compressor only after airflow and control-side faults are excluded, noting that if the compressor is hot and the condenser fan is not operating, the fan motor is the prime suspect.

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you are not comfortable pulling the refrigerator out and cleaning the condenser coils, or if airflow and basic checks do not resolve the symptom. Sealed-system testing for refrigerant leaks or compressor efficiency requires gauges and EPA certification. Any work involving refrigerant recovery, vacuum, and recharge must be performed by a licensed technician.
