Frigidaire Freezer Not Freezing - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Dirty condenser coils are the most common cause. Pull the unit, vacuum the coils, and verify the condenser fan runs to restore cooling.

Frigidaire Freezer Not Freezing — What’s Happening

When your Frigidaire freezer is not freezing, the compartment is not reaching the normal operating range of -6°F to 6°F. This symptom is not a single fault code. It points to a problem in cooling, airflow, defrost, door sealing, or the sealed refrigerant system.

Frigidaire directs technicians to check power, airflow, door seals, frost buildup, and the cooling system when this happens. In the field, the problem is usually caused by dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, defrost system failure, a bad door gasket, condenser fan failure, compressor start problems, or a sealed-system fault.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify power by checking the outlet, breaker, GFCI, and that interior lights or indicator lights are on.
  2. Confirm the refrigerator is plugged into a dedicated 115 to 120 V, 15 or 20 A grounded branch circuit as Frigidaire specifies.
  3. Place a thermometer in the freezer and confirm the actual temperature is above the -6°F to 6°F operating range.
  4. Inspect the door gasket using the dollar-bill test (close the door on a bill and pull it out, resistance should be even all around) and replace the gasket if it fails.
  5. Remove items blocking vents inside the freezer and verify air can flow freely between compartments.
  6. Pull the refrigerator out and vacuum the condenser coils, then verify the condenser fan runs if your model has one.
  7. Remove the evaporator cover and inspect the coil for heavy frost or ice, and check whether the evaporator fan is physically blocked or the blade does not spin freely by hand.
  8. Test the evaporator fan motor for continuity and replace it if it fails, and if heavy frost is present test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat for continuity to diagnose the defrost system.
  9. Listen for clicking or short cycling at the compressor and test compressor windings for continuity if you suspect a start relay, overload, or compressor fault.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Evaporator fan motorAmazon | Replace if the motor fails continuity testing or the blade does not spin freely.
Defrost heaterAmazon | Replace if it shows no continuity and heavy frost is blocking the evaporator coil.
Defrost thermostat (bi-metal)Amazon | Replace if it does not close when frozen and frost buildup is present.
Door gasketAmazon | Replace if the dollar-bill test shows uneven resistance or visible tears.

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you find an incomplete frost pattern on the evaporator coil, suspect a sealed-system refrigerant leak, or need to replace the compressor or any start components. Sealed-system work requires recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, and an EPA 608 license. Also call a technician if you are not comfortable testing electrical components with a multimeter or working inside the evaporator and compressor compartments.
