Frigidaire Oven Broiler Not Working - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Most often a failed broil element (electric) or igniter (gas). Check for visible damage, test continuity, and replace the part.

Frigidaire Oven Broiler Not Working — What’s Happening

A non-working broiler means your Frigidaire oven is not delivering heat through the broil system when you select Broil mode. On electric ranges, this typically points to the upper broil element not receiving power, having an open circuit, or a control path failure. On gas models, the broiler igniter usually fails to glow hot enough to open the gas valve or does not receive power at all.

This is a functional failure rather than a displayed error code. The appliance may work fine for baking but simply will not heat when you command Broil. The root cause is almost always in the heating component itself, the wiring feeding it, or the control relay that energizes the circuit.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify you have selected Broil mode correctly and are following the model’s rack position and door requirements (some models require the door slightly open).
  2. Check that the range has proper line voltage at the outlet and that no breaker or fuse has tripped.
  3. Inspect the broil element (electric) or igniter (gas) visually for breaks, blistering, warping, or any physical damage.
  4. Test the broil element for continuity with a multimeter (power off and disconnected). An open reading means replace the element.
  5. Inspect all wiring and terminal connections at the element and at the rear of the oven for burn marks, looseness, or damaged insulation.
  6. Check the oven temperature probe resistance if your model uses one. A cold probe should read 1000 to 1100 ohms at room temperature (32°F to 75°F). An open or wildly different reading indicates a bad sensor.
  7. Test the control board output by measuring for approximately 120 VAC at the broil relay output when Broil is commanded (if bake still works but broil does not, suspect the relay or board).
  8. For gas models, verify the igniter glows bright and the gas valve opens. If the igniter is weak or does not glow, call a qualified technician to replace it and check the gas safety circuit.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Broil elementAmazon | Electric models only. Must match your range’s wattage and terminal configuration.
Oven igniterAmazon | Gas models. Professional replacement recommended due to gas system safety.
Oven temperature probe (sensor)Amazon | Should read 1000–1100 ohms cold. Probe failure can disable all heating modes.
Oven control board (relay board)Amazon | Replace only after confirming no voltage output to broil circuit and all other components test good.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with line voltage, if your range is gas (all igniter and gas valve work should be done by a qualified technician), or if you have replaced the element or igniter and checked all wiring but the broiler still does not work. Control board diagnosis and replacement also benefit from a technician’s experience, since misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary parts cost. Any time you see arcing, heavy burn marks at terminals, or smell gas, stop immediately and call for service. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
