⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a door-switch issue. Check that the door latches fully and test the door switch for continuity when closed.

Frigidaire Dryer Won’t Start — What’s Happening

A Frigidaire dryer that won’t start is most often showing “dr” on the display, which means the control board thinks the door is open and won’t allow the cycle to begin. The door switch circuit must be closed for the dryer to run. If there’s no display code at all, the machine may have a power supply problem, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed control board.

Some models won’t show any code but still refuse to start because a thermal limiter has opened due to overheating, a motor overload has tripped, or the control board has failed. Restricted airflow and heavy loads can also trigger motor protection circuits that prevent startup until the machine cools down.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer and confirm the exact symptom: note any display code (especially “dr”), whether the drum turns by hand freely, and whether interior lights come on.
  2. Check that the door closes completely and the latch engages the striker cleanly. Adjust or realign the striker if the door sits crooked or doesn’t click shut.
  3. Access the door switch (usually behind the front panel near the door strike) and use a multimeter to test continuity across the common and normally open terminals with the door closed. You should see continuity or low resistance when closed and an open reading when the door is open.
  4. Inspect the door-switch harness back to the control board for broken wires, loose connectors, or chafed insulation if the switch itself tests good.
  5. Verify incoming power at the wall receptacle and the dryer’s terminal block. An electric dryer needs both legs of 240 V, and a missing leg will prevent the motor from running even if lights work.
  6. Locate and test the thermal limiter or thermal fuse on the blower housing (and heater housing on electric models) for continuity. An open reading means the device has failed and must be replaced, and you must also identify and fix the cause of overheating (restricted vent, clogged lint screen, or heavy load).
  7. If all door and thermal circuits test good, reset the control board by unplugging the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes, then plug it back in and retry the start sequence.
  8. If the “dr” code persists or the dryer still won’t start after all other checks pass, replace the electronic control board and run a test cycle to confirm the repair.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Frigidaire dryer door switchAmazon | Match your model number; some use a two-terminal switch, others use three-terminal.
Frigidaire dryer thermal limiter or thermal fuseAmazon | One-time-use safety device; always address the airflow restriction that caused it to open.
Frigidaire dryer electronic control boardAmazon | Model-specific; verify your complete model and serial number before ordering.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you’re not comfortable working with live voltage at the terminal block, if you can’t safely disassemble the front or top panels to reach the door switch, or if diagnostic testing points to the control board and you’re unsure about transferring connectors and mounting hardware. A qualified appliance technician has the wiring diagrams and model-specific fault-code lists to pinpoint control and wiring faults quickly, and they can also check motor windings and relay circuits that are difficult to access without the right tools.
