Electrolux Dryer Burning Smell — What’s Happening

A burning smell from your Electrolux dryer is a symptom, not a fault code. It means something is overheating, creating friction, or shorting electrically. The most common mechanisms are lint restricting airflow and causing the cabinet or heater to overheat, a worn drive belt slipping and creating a rubber odor, or a component like the motor, heating element, thermostat, or control board running too hot or failing.

This is a safety issue. The smell can come from lint that is close to ignition temperature, melting plastic or rubber, or electrical arcing. Stop using the dryer as soon as you notice the odor and do not restart it until you identify and fix the source.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer immediately and remove the load.
  2. Pull and clean the lint filter, then vacuum the lint chute and any accessible lint inside the cabinet.
  3. Disconnect the vent hose from the dryer and inspect the entire duct run and exterior termination for blockage, kinks, or crushed sections.
  4. Run a short empty test cycle only after cleaning to see if the odor returns.
  5. If the smell persists, remove the front or top panel and inspect the drive belt for glazing, cracks, melting, or black residue on the drum and pulleys.
  6. Check drum rollers and the idler pulley for binding or friction, and inspect the blower wheel and housing for lint or obstruction.
  7. Inspect the heating element for broken coils or visible burn damage and test the thermostat with a multimeter for continuity.
  8. Examine the main control board and door switch area for burn marks, arcing, or scorched components, and replace any visibly damaged parts.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the odor returns after you have cleaned all lint and verified the vent path is clear, or if you find visible burn damage on the control board, heating element, or motor that you are not comfortable replacing. Hidden lint inside the blower housing or a failing motor can be difficult to access without a full teardown. If you see arcing, melted wiring, or scorched plastic anywhere in the cabinet, shut off the breaker and call for service before attempting further diagnosis.
