Danfoss FC302 ALARM 45 — What It Means

ALARM 45 on a Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC302 is labeled “Earth fault 2” or “Ground fault” in the drive’s documentation. The drive has detected leakage current to ground using its internal ground-fault monitoring circuitry. This is a trip condition, meaning the drive stops the motor immediately to protect the equipment from damage. It is not an overcurrent, overvoltage, or overheating fault. The detection system identifies imbalance or leakage in the motor circuit grounding path.

The fault points to a problem in the motor, motor cables, grounding connections, or less commonly the drive’s internal hardware. Danfoss directs troubleshooting toward the motor circuit first, then toward control or option cards if the fault persists after the motor and cables are ruled out.

  4. Perform an insulation resistance test (megger test) on the motor and motor cables following your standard procedure and the motor manufacturer’s acceptable resistance limits to identify leakage or shorts to ground.

  6. Check the drive’s 24 V DC supply if your installation uses an external 24 V supply, and verify correct voltage and clean connections per the drive manual.
  7. Inspect and replace the control card or option card if the fault persists after the motor circuit is confirmed good, and check the heatsink fan for proper operation as part of broader drive health diagnostics.
