Continental Refrigerator Error Code E1 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Continental Refrigerator E1 means, why it happens, and how to fix it step by step.

Continental Refrigerator Error Code E1 — What It Means

The E1 error on Continental commercial refrigerators (reach-ins, undercounters, and prep tables) indicates a temperature sensor fault — the cabinet air sensor or evaporator sensor is reading out of range or has failed. Continental’s electronic controllers use NTC thermistors to monitor cabinet temperature; E1 appears when the sensor input shows open circuit, short circuit, or a reading outside the expected temperature range.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Locate and test the sensor — The air sensor is typically clipped to the evaporator coil or mounted in the upper interior of the cabinet. Disconnect it and measure resistance: ~10kΩ at 77°F (25°C) for a standard 10k NTC. Open circuit = replace.
  2. Inspect the sensor wire — Trace from the sensor to the controller looking for pinch points, cuts, or heat damage.
  3. Clean the connector — Unplug the sensor connector at the board. Inspect pins for corrosion (green film). Spray with electrical contact cleaner and reseat firmly.
  4. Replace the sensor — Install a Continental OEM replacement sensor for your model. Non-OEM sensors may have different resistance curves.
  5. Power cycle — Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in. E1 should clear once the controller reads a valid temperature.

When to Call a Pro

If sensor and wiring both test good and E1 persists, the controller board needs replacement. Continental authorized service handles controller-level repairs.
