Beverage-Air Refrigeration Error Codes
Beverage-Air reach-in refrigerators and freezers (BS series, BM series, DDR series) are among the most common coolers in bars, convenience stores, and restaurant service areas. Newer models have a digital controller with error code display.

Most Common Beverage-Air Faults
E1 — Cabinet Temperature Sensor
The most common Beverage-Air fault. The cabinet temperature probe is a 10K NTC thermistor. When it fails (open or short), the controller defaults to continuous compressor run. The sensor is located in the evaporator housing. Test resistance at room temperature (77°F): should read approximately 10K ohms. A reading of 0 ohms (short) or OL (open) means the sensor needs replacement. Beverage-Air part 8584 (~$15) is the OEM replacement thermostat assembly.
HI — High Temperature Alarm
The cabinet is too warm. Before calling a technician, clean the condenser coil. Beverage-Air condensers are bottom-mounted on most BS series — they collect dust, lint, and debris from bar/floors. Remove the front kick panel and vacuum the coil. A dirty condenser reduces cooling capacity by 30-50%. This resolves about 70% of HI alarms.
No Display (Dead Unit)
Beverage-Air digital controllers fail occasionally. If the display is blank but the compressor runs, the controller has failed. If both the display and compressor are dead, check the power cord, the power switch, and the control board fuse. The controller (Beverage-Air 8584, ~$75) is a standard Dixell-style controller — replacements are available at any refrigeration supply house.
Compressor Runs But No Cooling
The compressor is running but the cooler isn’t cold. Two likely causes: (1) the condenser fan isn’t running — check the fan blade spins freely and the motor has power. Beverage-Air condenser fan motor 3651 (~$55). (2) The refrigerant charge has leaked — look for oil residue on the copper lines, indicating a leak. This requires a licensed refrigeration technician to repair.
