Coleman Furnace E2 Error Code — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Coleman furnace E2 means, why the pressure switch faults, and how to diagnose and fix it.

Coleman Furnace E2 Error Code — What It Means

E2 on a Coleman furnace (manufactured by York/Johnson Controls under the Coleman brand) indicates a pressure switch fault. The induced draft motor ran but the pressure switch did not close within the timed window, so the board blocked the ignition sequence. This is a safety interlock: without confirmed draft, the board will not open the gas valve.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Inspect the vent termination — Check both the exhaust and combustion air intake caps (if applicable) for obstructions. Clear any ice, debris, or blockage.
  2. Check the pressure switch hose — With power off, trace the small rubber hose from the inducer housing to the pressure switch. Feel for soft spots, cracks, or disconnections. Blow through it to confirm it is clear. Replace if cracked.
  3. Test the inducer motor and capacitor — Restore power and listen for the inducer during a heat call startup. A sluggish or loud motor suggests a failing capacitor or bearing. Test the capacitor with a capacitor meter.
  4. Verify pressure switch operation — With the inducer running, use a manometer at the hose fitting on the inducer housing to measure actual draft pressure. Compare to the pressure switch rating stamped on the switch body. If draft is within spec but the switch stays open, replace the switch.
  5. Reset and confirm — Power cycle the furnace, run a full heat cycle, and verify no E2 code returns.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Pressure switchAmazon | Match Coleman/York part number; check pressure rating
Pressure switch hoseAmazon | 1/4” ID rubber or silicone; available in bulk
Inducer motor capacitorAmazon | Check before ordering a full motor assembly
Induced draft motorAmazon | Replace if capacitor is good but motor runs slow or noisy

When to Call a Pro

If the flue is clear and the inducer runs at speed but the pressure switch still won’t close, have a licensed HVAC technician verify that the heat exchanger is not cracked (a crack can alter pressure differential in the flue) and that the pressure switch rating matches the furnace model requirements.
