Carrier Error Code 58 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Carrier error code 58 flame sense fault means, why it trips, and how to diagnose and fix it step by step.

Carrier Error Code 58 — What It Means

Carrier error code 58 indicates a flame sense fault — the flame sensor detected a flame signal when the control board was not in an active ignition sequence, or the flame was sensed but then lost unexpectedly during operation (nuisance flame loss). Code 58 on Carrier furnaces (Comfort, Performance, and Infinity series) protects against gas valve leakage and unstable combustion. Depending on how the fault presents, 58 can indicate a legitimately faulty flame sensor, contaminated sensor, or a gas supply pressure issue causing an unstable flame.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Clean the flame sensor rod — Power off the furnace. Locate the flame sensor (a metal rod extending into the burner flame with a ceramic insulator and a single wire). Remove it (one screw), lightly clean the rod with fine emery cloth or steel wool, and reinstall. This resolves the majority of code 58 faults.
  2. Inspect the sensor wire and connector — Check the ignition wire from the control board to the flame sensor for damage, loose connection, or melted insulation. A loose connector causes intermittent flame signal loss.
  3. Check sensor position — Confirm the flame rod is positioned so it extends into the main burner flame. If it’s bent away from the flame, carefully bend it back into the correct position.
  4. Observe flame stability — Run a heat cycle and watch the burner flames through the observation port (if present) or the burner compartment. A wavering, lifting, or yellow-tipped flame indicates gas pressure or combustion air issues.
  5. Reset the system — Cycle the breaker to clear code 58 after repairs. If the code returns within one heating cycle, the flame sensor or gas valve requires replacement.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Flame sensorAmazon | Replace when cleaning doesn’t restore a reliable signal
Flame sensor wire/harnessAmazon | Replace if insulation is damaged
Gas valveAmazon | Replace if unstable flame is confirmed to be from valve pressure variation

When to Call a Pro

Code 58 from a cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide hazard. If the flame sensor and gas supply both check out but code 58 persists, have a licensed HVAC tech perform a heat exchanger inspection before operating the furnace further.
