This is the most confusing part of furnace diagnostics. A neighbor with a Carrier sees three blinks and runs to change their air filter. You do the same on your Rheem and the blinks keep coming. The code is the same number. The problem is different.

1. Read the Code on Your Specific Brand

Locate the furnace control board. The access panel usually covers the blower compartment. Look for a small LED window or a clear plastic lens on the control board. Count the blinks through three full sequences to confirm you have the count right.

2. Check the Air Filter First (Every Brand)

A dirty filter causes airflow problems that can trigger pressure switches, limit switches, or both. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, replace it. This fixes roughly 30% of all three-blink calls regardless of brand.

3. Inspect the Condensate Drain (90%+ Furnaces Only)

High-efficiency furnaces (90%+ AFUE) produce condensation that drains through a tube to a floor drain or pump. If this drain is clogged, water backs up and blocks the pressure switch hose. Clear the drain line with a wet/dry vacuum at the exterior termination. This is the second most common cause of three-blink pressure switch faults.

4. Check Pressure Switch Tubing

The pressure switch connects to the inducer housing through a small silicone tube. Over time, these tubes can crack, develop pinholes, or slip off the barb fitting. Inspect the full length of the tube. Replace cracked tubing. Re-secure loose tubing with a zip tie.

5. Verify the Inducer Motor Is Running

The inducer motor is the fan that pulls combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the flue. When the thermostat calls for heat, this motor should start within seconds. If it does not start, the pressure switch never closes and the board flashes the three-blink code. Listen for the inducer spinning. If silent, check voltage at the motor and look for a failed capacitor or seized bearings.

6. Check the Vent Termination Outside

Snow, ice, bird nests, or debris can block the flue termination outside. A blocked flue prevents the inducer from pulling proper draft, which keeps the pressure switch from closing. Go outside during the heating cycle and confirm air is flowing from the vent pipe.

Brand-Specific Details

Carrier and Bryant

Three flashes on Carrier means pressure switch open with the inducer running. Carrier also has two-digit codes (31, 32, 33) related to the pressure switch circuit. If your Carrier has a two-digit display, code 31 means pressure switch failed to open, 32 means pressure switch failed to close, and 33 means auxiliary limit switch circuit. These are warnings. Code 13 is the hard lockout that follows repeated limit trips.

Trane and American Standard

Trane uses both flash codes and two-digit displays depending on the model year. Three flashes means pressure switch open with the inducer running. On some Trane models, code 2 (two flashes) also relates to the pressure switch. The difference is timing: code 2 means the pressure switch was closed when it should have been open (before the inducer starts), and three flashes means the switch stayed open when it should have closed (after inducer starts).

Lennox

Lennox Elite and Merit series use 1-10 blink codes. Three blinks means pressure switch failure. If you have a Lennox with a seven-segment display, you may also see a numeric code. Common Lennox pressure switch issues include cracked hoses near the inducer housing and blocked condensate drains.

Goodman and Amana

Goodman uses a strict 1-8 flash code system. Three flashes means pressure switch stuck open. Two flashes means pressure switch stuck closed. The distinction tells you which part of the cycle the issue occurs. Three flashes (open) usually points to a blocked vent, cracked hose, or failed inducer. Two flashes (closed) points to a stuck pressure switch or wiring short.

Rheem and Ruud

This is where three blinks breaks the pattern. On Rheem, three flashes means limit switch open, not pressure switch. Rheem also uses two-digit codes. Code 13 on Rheem means limit circuit lockout after three consecutive limit switch trips. If your Rheem shows three flashes, check for airflow restrictions first: dirty filter, blocked returns, or a failing blower motor.

York

Three flashes on York indicates a pressure switch circuit fault. Start with the same workflow: filter, condensate drain, pressure switch tubing, inducer motor, and vent termination.
