Carrier 13 Soft Lockout — What's Different from Hard Lockout

⚡ Quick Answer

Carrier fault code 13 is a soft lockout, not a hard lockout. Learn what triggers it, how it differs from code 31, and how to clear it without a service call.

Carrier Fault Code 13 — Soft Lockout Explained

Carrier fault code 13 means the furnace has entered a soft lockout after detecting a limit switch open condition. Unlike a hard lockout (code 31 or 33), a soft lockout allows the furnace to attempt automatic recovery — it will try to restart after a timed delay rather than requiring a manual reset.

Soft Lockout vs. Hard Lockout

FeatureSoft Lockout (Code 13)Hard Lockout (Code 31/33)
Auto-recoveryYes, after timed delayNo — manual reset required
CauseLimit switch opened during runRepeated failures, flame rollout
Danger levelLowerHigher
Restart neededUsually automaticPower cycle or thermostat reset

What Triggers Code 13

The limit switch opens when the furnace heat exchanger overheats. Common triggers:

How to Fix It

Step 1 — Check and replace the air filter. If it’s grey and matted, that’s your answer. Replace with a new filter and cycle power.

Step 2 — Check all supply and return registers. Open every closed register. Move furniture away from floor returns.

Step 3 — Let the furnace cool 30 minutes then restore power. If the code clears and doesn’t return, the fix worked.

Step 4 — Check the blower wheel. Remove the blower door and spin the wheel by hand. It should spin freely. Look for dust buildup on the blades — a caked blower can reduce airflow by 40%.

Step 5 — If it keeps returning, call an HVAC tech. Repeated code 13s can escalate to a hard lockout (code 31) and eventually crack a heat exchanger.

Parts That May Be Needed

PartWhyAvg. Cost
Air filter (MERV 8–11)Primary fixAmazon | $10–25
Limit switchIf switch fails openAmazon | $20–50
Blower motorIf not running properlyAmazon | $150–400
IFC boardIf it keeps locking out incorrectlyAmazon | $100–300

When to Call a Pro

If code 13 clears but returns within one heating cycle, you have an airflow problem deeper than a dirty filter. A tech needs to measure static pressure. If you see code 13 followed by code 31, the system has progressed to hard lockout — stop running it and get it inspected for a cracked heat exchanger.
