Bosch Refrigerator Freezer Not Freezing — What’s Happening

When your Bosch refrigerator’s freezer compartment stops freezing, the control system is not managing cooling properly. The compressor may run but fail to maintain cold temperatures, or the unit may not run cooling cycles at all. On some models you may see an E2 fault code on the display, which signals a defective freezer compartment temperature sensor or thermostat issue. Even without a code, the same underlying problems can cause the freezer to stay warm.

The temperature sensor tells the control board how cold the freezer is so it can regulate compressor run time and defrost cycles. If the sensor fails or its wiring is damaged, the board gets no signal or a bad signal and cannot control freezing. Other basic issues like incorrect thermostat settings, no power to the unit, or a poor door seal can also prevent proper freezing.

  1. Verify that the unit is plugged in, the outlet has power, and the circuit breaker is not tripped.
  2. Check the freezer temperature setting on the control panel and confirm it is set to the recommended cold position (usually 0°F or lower).
  3. Inspect the door gasket all the way around the freezer door for tears, gaps, or deformation, and confirm the door closes fully and latches without obstruction.
  4. Unplug the refrigerator for 5 to 10 minutes, then restore power to reset the control board and clear any transient faults.
  5. If an E2 code appears or the freezer stays warm, locate the freezer temperature sensor behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment and inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage.
  6. Disconnect the sensor harness and measure the sensor resistance with a multimeter, then compare the reading to the manufacturer’s thermistor specification for your exact model (specifications are model-specific and not provided in general troubleshooting).
