Amana and Goodman: Same Platform

Amana is a Goodman sister brand. Daikin Goodman Global owns both companies. They share identical control boards, wiring, and error code systems. Every code in this guide applies to Amana AMV, AMS, and AME models. It also covers Goodman GMEC, GCEC, and GMS8 models. If you have a Goodman furnace, the troubleshooting process is the same. The parts are interchangeable. The diagnostic flow is identical.

This matters because many online guides treat these brands separately. They are not. A single LED flash pattern means the same thing on both. You can use Goodman repair manuals for Amana furnaces and vice versa.

How to Read Amana Error Codes

Most Amana furnaces display error codes through a single amber LED on the control board. The light sits on the main circuit board behind the lower access panel. Count the flashes between pauses. Each flash pattern corresponds to a specific fault. A long pause separates one code cycle from the next.

Some newer models use a 2-digit display. The Amana 2-stage modulating furnaces fall into this group. These models show error code numbers directly on a small LED screen. You do not count flashes. You read the number.

Write down the code before you reset the furnace. Power cycling clears the error memory. If you reset without recording, you lose the diagnostic data.

LED Flash Codes

1 flash: Ignition lockout. The control board tried to ignite the burner three times and failed. This is the most common Amana fault. Start with the flame sensor. Clean it with a fine emery cloth. Then check the gas supply. Make sure the gas valve is open. Verify the igniter gap is correct. A gap wider than 1/8 inch prevents reliable ignition.

3 flashes: Pressure switch stuck open. The switch did not close when the inducer motor started running. Start with the condensate drain line. A clog blocks the airflow needed to close the switch. Check the vent pipe for snow, nests, or debris. Verify the inducer motor spins freely. A seized inducer motor will not create enough draft.

4 flashes: High limit switch open. The furnace overheated. A dirty air filter is the most common cause. Replace it immediately. Check the blower motor operation. A slow or stuck blower motor allows heat to build up inside the cabinet. Also check the ductwork for blockages or closed registers.

5 flashes: Flame sensed without call for heat. This is a safety-critical error. The gas valve may be leaking. The control board may have a shorted circuit. Do not reset the furnace repeatedly. Do not leave the furnace running. Diagnostic testing with a multimeter is required.

6 flashes: Polarity or ground fault. The power line neutral and hot wires are reversed. Or the ground connection is poor. Check the furnace power wiring at the disconnect switch and at the control board. A miswired outlet or reversed polarity at the panel causes this error. Use a non-contact voltage tester and a multimeter.

7 flashes: Gas valve relay fault. The board detected a failure in the gas valve circuit. The relay on the control board failed to open or close correctly. Replace the control board. Do not replace the gas valve. The valve itself is rarely the problem.

8 flashes: Blower motor or limit circuit fault. The blower did not operate correctly during the heating cycle. Check the blower motor capacitor first. A weak capacitor prevents the motor from starting. Verify the blower wheel spins freely. Check all limit switches for continuity.

2-Digit Error Codes

E1: Control board internal fault. The board detected an internal failure. Replace the control board.

E2: Watchdog timeout or ground issue. The control microchip lost communication or sensed a ground anomaly. Check the furnace ground wire. Verify the neutral-to-ground bond at the main panel.

E3: 24VAC power interruption or limit circuit open. The control board lost power briefly. Check the door switch, roll-out switches, and limit switches for continuity. A single intermittent limit switch can trigger this code.

EE2: Invalid control board parameter. The board found a corrupt setting in its memory. Power cycle the furnace to clear it. Turn the power off for 60 seconds. Turn it back on. If the code returns, replace the control board.

EF: Flame detected with no call for heat. Same meaning as 5 flashes. Do not bypass this error. Call a professional.

Most Common Fix: Clean the Flame Sensor

Over half of Amana furnace service calls start with a 1 flash code. The fix takes ten minutes. You need a screwdriver and a fine emery cloth.

Turn off power to the furnace. Use the disconnect switch or flip the breaker. Remove the burner door. Locate the flame sensor. It is a metal rod mounted on the burner assembly near one of the burners. It looks like a small metal stick with a ceramic base and a single wire attached.

Remove the retaining screw. Pull the sensor straight out. Gently clean the metal tip with a fine emery cloth. Use 400 grit or finer. Do not use sandpaper. Do not use a file. You want to remove the thin layer of oxidation, not gouge the metal. Wipe the sensor clean with a dry cloth after sanding.

Reinstall the sensor. Tighten the retaining screw. Restore power. Reset the furnace by turning the thermostat off for 30 seconds, then back to heat.

Amana Lifetime Warranty

Amana offers a limited lifetime heat exchanger warranty for the original owner. You must register the furnace within 90 days of installation. The warranty covers the primary and secondary heat exchangers for as long as you own the home. Labor is not included after the first year.

This is one of the best warranties in the HVAC industry. It builds trust with homeowners. But water quality, improper installation, or lack of maintenance voids the warranty. A corroded heat exchanger from a poorly maintained condensate system is not covered. A cracked heat exchanger from improper gas pressure is not covered.

A 5 flash or EF code means the furnace detected a flame without a gas valve call. This points to a leaking gas valve or a shorted control board. Do not operate the furnace. Shut it down. Call an HVAC technician immediately.

A 1 flash code that returns after cleaning the flame sensor indicates a deeper problem. Low gas pressure can prevent reliable ignition. A cracked flame sensor insulator shorts the flame signal to ground. A failing control board cannot sustain the ignition sequence. These require a manometer and combustion analyzer to diagnose properly.

For any code that returns within 24 hours of your fix, stop troubleshooting and call a pro. Amana and Goodman furnaces have specific combustion setup requirements. Running a furnace with incorrect airflow or gas pressure shortens heat exchanger life. The cost of a service call is less than the cost of replacing a heat exchanger.
