⚡ Quick Answer

Usually caused by a clogged vent restricting airflow. Clean the lint filter, exhaust duct, and outside vent to restore normal cycle shutdown.

Amana Dryer Won’t Stop — What’s Happening

When an Amana dryer won’t stop, it means the machine keeps running after the cycle should have ended or does not shut off when it’s supposed to. The dryer may run continuously or fail to advance through the cycle properly, staying on indefinitely until you manually turn it off or unplug it.

This is usually a problem with either the airflow system causing overheating and faulty cycle detection, or a control component that isn’t advancing or terminating the run signal. It’s not typically an error code on most Amana dryers, just abnormal behavior where the machine doesn’t recognize when to stop.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm whether the problem happens on timed-dry cycles, auto-dry cycles, or both to separate timer and control faults from moisture-sensing and airflow faults.
  2. Pull and clean the lint filter, then disconnect the dryer and inspect the full length of the exhaust duct and outside termination for heavy lint buildup or blockage.
  3. Reconnect the dryer and run a short test cycle to verify it heats properly and does not obviously overheat, watching for normal temperature rise and air movement at the vent outlet.
  4. If airflow is clear and heating is normal, unplug the dryer and access the control panel to inspect the timer or main control board for signs of arcing, burned contacts, or stuck components.
  5. Check the start button for mechanical sticking and test the door switch with a multimeter for correct continuity when the door is closed and open.
  6. Isolate the suspected timer, control board, or switch and perform continuity or function testing per the service manual.
  7. Replace the failed component, reassemble the dryer, and run a complete cycle to verify it shuts off at the proper time without overrunning.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Dryer main control boardAmazon | Electronic models, if control logic fails to stop the cycle.
Dryer timerAmazon | Mechanical-timer models, replaces worn contacts or motor.
Door switchAmazon | If testing shows it does not open circuit correctly.
Start switch assemblyAmazon | When the button is stuck or contacts remain closed.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you’ve cleaned all venting and the dryer still won’t stop, or if you’re not comfortable testing live voltage on control boards and timer assemblies. A pro can safely isolate whether the fault is in the timer, main control, or a sensing circuit, and replace the correct part without risking shock or further damage to the dryer.
