Amana Dryer F3 E1 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F3 E1 means exhaust thermistor fault on Amana dryers. Power down 5 minutes, restart, and run a timed cycle to test the thermistor.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Amana Dryer F3 E1 Error Code — What It Means

The F3 E1 code on an Amana dryer signals an exhaust thermistor fault. The exhaust thermistor monitors temperature in the exhaust air stream and reports back to the control board. When that sensor fails or its circuit opens, the dryer cannot safely regulate heat and throws F3 E1.

This is a dryer-only code. If you see F3 E1 on an Amana washer, it means something different (water-level detection), so always confirm you are looking at the dryer manual for your appliance.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off the dryer at the circuit breaker and leave it off for a full 5 minutes to clear the control memory.
  2. Restore power and start a new timed dry cycle (not an auto-sense cycle).
  3. Run the dryer for 5 minutes and watch for the F3 E1 code to return.
  4. If the code comes back, unplug the dryer and locate the exhaust thermistor (usually clipped to the exhaust duct near the blower housing or rear of the drum).
  5. Disconnect the thermistor harness and test the thermistor with a multimeter for continuity or consult your model’s resistance table (the public Amana page does not list exact ohms).
  6. Replace the exhaust thermistor if it reads open, shorted, or out of spec.
  7. Inspect all wiring and connectors in the thermistor circuit for damage or corrosion, and repair or replace as needed before reassembling and testing.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Exhaust thermistorAmazon | Match the part number to your dryer model (usually printed on the cabinet or inside the door frame).
Dryer wiring harness (thermistor section)Amazon | Only if wires are cut, pinched, or connectors are damaged beyond cleaning.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if the code returns after you replace the thermistor and verify all connections are clean and tight. At that point the main control board may be failing to process the thermistor input correctly, and diagnosing control logic requires a service manual and model-specific test points. Also call a pro if you are uncomfortable working inside a 240 V dryer cabinet or if your model uses a thermistor assembly that is hard to reach without removing the drum.
