Amana Dryer F26 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F26 on an Amana dryer is a motor-drive or motor-control fault. Start with a 5-minute power reset, then check the drive motor and control board.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Amana Dryer F26 Error Code — What It Means

The F26 error code on your Amana dryer indicates a motor-drive or motor-control circuit fault. This is not an airflow or vent restriction problem (Amana uses a separate AF code for that). The fault typically lies in the drive motor itself, the machine control electronics, the belt switch, or the wiring harness connecting these components. Amana’s official troubleshooting begins with a power reset, and if the code returns, the repair moves into the motor and control circuitry.

This code is specific to Amana dryers and should not be confused with F26 codes on washers or ovens from other brands, which address completely different systems.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker for a full 5 minutes, then restore power and run a test cycle to see if the F26 code clears.
  2. Unplug the dryer and remove the front or rear access panel to reach the drive motor, belt switch, and control board wiring.
  3. Test the machine control electronics by disconnecting power and measuring resistance across terminals P8-4 and P9-1 with an ohmmeter (if you read 1 to 6 ohms, replace the control board).
  4. Check the drive motor start winding resistance (if it reads much greater than 4 ohms, replace the motor).
  5. Test the belt switch by measuring resistance between the two blue wires while manually moving the belt switch pulley (it should go from open/infinite resistance to a few ohms when closed, or replace the switch).
  6. Inspect the wiring harness between the control board and motor circuit for breaks, burns, or loose connectors, and repair or replace any damaged sections.
  7. Verify the door switch by measuring resistance across P8-3 (white wire) and P8-4 (tan wire) with the door closed (it should read 0 to 2 ohms, or replace the door switch assembly).

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Amana dryer machine control board (main control electronics)Amazon | Order by your model number if resistance test across P8-4 and P9-1 falls in the 1 to 6 ohm range.
Amana dryer drive motorAmazon | Replace if the start winding resistance is much greater than 4 ohms.
Amana dryer belt switchAmazon | Choose the switch that matches your drum belt configuration and harness connector.
Amana dryer door switch assemblyAmazon | Needed if the closed-door resistance test across P8-3 and P8-4 does not read 0 to 2 ohms.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if the power reset does not clear the F26 code and you are not comfortable working with electrical circuits and a multimeter. The diagnostics require you to disconnect power, access internal components, and measure resistance at specific harness terminals. If you complete the checks and cannot isolate the fault, or if multiple components test out of specification, a professional can quickly trace the circuit and order the correct parts for your model. Most Amana dryer motor and control board replacements take under an hour when you have the right part in hand, so professional labor costs are typically reasonable.
