York Furnace Error Code E3 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What York Furnace Error Code E3 means, why it happens, and how to fix it step by step.

York Furnace Error Code E3 — What It Means

York Furnace Error Code E3 indicates a pressure switch stuck closed fault — the draft inducer pressure switch is signaling closed (pressure detected) when it should be open at the start of the ignition sequence. York’s control board checks the pressure switch at the beginning of every cycle; if it’s already closed before the inducer starts, the board interprets this as a stuck switch or a wiring short and locks out for safety.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Power off and inspect the pressure switch — Locate the pressure switch (typically mounted near the inducer motor). Disconnect the two wires and test continuity across the switch terminals. If it reads closed with the inducer off, the switch is failed.
  2. Inspect the pressure tubing — Check the small rubber tubing from the switch to the inducer housing for kinks, cracks, or blockages. Blow through it gently — if airflow is restricted, clean or replace.
  3. Check for water in the inducer housing — Look for condensate backup in the bottom of the inducer assembly. Drain if present and clear the condensate drain line.
  4. Inspect the wiring — Check both switch wires for pinch points, burned insulation, or contact with metal edges. A shorted wire reads exactly like a stuck-closed switch.
  5. Replace the switch and reset — Install a replacement York pressure switch (match to model and WC rating). Restore power and run a heating cycle to confirm E3 clears.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Draft pressure switchAmazon | Match to York model number — WC rating varies
Pressure switch tubingAmazon | Replace if cracked or kinked beyond straightening
Condensate drain hoseAmazon | Replace if clogged and causing water backup

When to Call a Pro

If the switch, wiring, and tubing all check out and E3 persists, the control board may be misreading the switch input. Board diagnostics and replacement require a licensed HVAC technician.
