York 8 Flashes Error Code — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What 8 flashes on a York furnace means, why ignition lockout occurs, and how to diagnose and reset the system.

York 8 Flashes Error Code — What It Means

Eight LED flashes on a York furnace indicates ignition lockout. The control board made multiple attempts to light the burners — typically three tries — and failed to establish or prove a flame on any attempt. After the final failed ignition attempt, the board locks out to prevent unburned gas from accumulating. The furnace will not attempt ignition again until manually reset by cycling the power.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Power cycle to reset lockout — Turn the furnace power switch off for 30 seconds, then restore power. This clears the lockout and allows another ignition sequence. Watch the sequence carefully.
  2. Observe the igniter — During the ignition attempt, the hot surface igniter should glow bright orange within 30–60 seconds. If it does not glow, measure its resistance with a multimeter (power off): silicon carbide should read 40–90 Ω.
  3. Clean the flame sensor — Locate the small metal rod in the burner flame path. Remove it (one screw) and lightly polish the rod with fine steel wool. Reinstall. This is the most common fix for repeated lockouts after the igniter checks good.
  4. Verify gas pressure — Confirm the manual gas shut-off valve on the supply line to the furnace is fully open. If you have a gas pressure gauge, verify manifold pressure matches the rating plate (typically 3.5” WC for natural gas).
  5. Check the inducer and pressure switch — Listen for the draft inducer to start before the igniter energizes. If the inducer runs but the pressure switch does not close (audible click or measured with multimeter), check the pressure switch hose for cracks or blockage.
  6. Replace the igniter or flame sensor — Based on your findings, replace whichever component has failed.
  7. Reset the system — After repairs, cycle power and confirm the furnace completes a full ignition sequence and runs through a heating cycle without relocking.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Hot surface igniterAmazon | Verify silicon carbide vs. silicon nitride type for your York model
Flame sensorAmazon | Universal or OEM; clean before replacing to confirm fault
Pressure switchAmazon | Replace if diaphragm is ruptured or contacts are open at correct vacuum
Draft inducer motorAmazon | Replace if motor is noisy, slow, or fails to start

When to Call a Pro

If the furnace continues to lock out after replacing the igniter and cleaning the flame sensor, call a licensed HVAC technician. Gas valve testing and combustion analysis require specialized equipment and should not be performed by unqualified personnel.
