Whirlpool WMH31017HS Microwave Problems & Error Codes — Overview

The Whirlpool WMH31017HS is a 1.7 cubic foot over-the-range microwave sharing the same platform and control architecture as other Whirlpool OTR models. The most frequent complaint on this series is keypad failure, usually triggering an F2 error code and locking out normal operation. Control board relay faults and sensor errors also appear regularly as the unit ages. Many of these faults will clear temporarily after a hard power reset, but if the code returns within a few cook cycles the underlying part has failed and needs replacement.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech for any fault that persists after a full power reset and touchpad replacement, or any time you need to test or replace high-voltage components such as the magnetron, high-voltage capacitor, or diode. The capacitor holds a lethal charge even when unplugged. If you see arcing inside the cavity, hear loud buzzing during cook, or smell burning from the control area, shut the unit down and call for service. Control board replacement on this model requires removing the entire wrapper and working around line-voltage and microwave-generating circuits, so unless you are comfortable with that level of disassembly and have proper discharge tools, leave it to a qualified appliance technician.
