Whirlpool Washer Sud Error Code — What It Means
Sud, also shown as Sd, means the washer detects an excessive amount of foam in the drum. The machine cannot spin water out through heavy suds, so it pauses and adds rinse time to break down the foam.
Common Causes
- Too much detergent Overdosing detergent is the leading cause of a Sud code.
- Wrong detergent type Non HE detergent creates far more foam than the washer can handle.
- Sudsing additives Some no splash bleach and additives contain thickeners that boost foam.
- Clogged drain filter A blocked filter traps foamy water and keeps the drum from clearing.
- Kinked drain hose A pinched hose slows draining so suds linger and trip the code.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Run a Rinse and Spin with no detergent to flush out the excess foam.
- Switch to a true HE detergent and measure no more than about one tablespoon per load.
- Stop using sudsing additives like no splash bleach that raise foam levels.
- Unplug the washer and open the lower panel to reach the drain pump filter.
- Set out a pan and towel, turn the filter counterclockwise, and clear all debris.
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks or clogs and clear them.
- Restore power and run a Clean Washer cycle to clear residue, then test a normal load.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| HE detergent | Amazon | A correct HE formula is the single biggest fix for repeat Sud codes. |
| Whirlpool washer drain pump filter | Amazon | Replace if the filter basket or cap is cracked or stripped. |
| Washer drain hose | Amazon | Swap in a new hose if the old one stays clogged after cleaning. |
When to Call a Pro
If you use correct HE detergent and the filter and hose are clear but Sud keeps returning, the drain pump or a pressure sensor may be failing. Call a technician if you cannot test these parts yourself.
