Whirlpool washer F28 means the main control board lost communication with the motor control unit. Reseat the wiring harness before replacing any boards.

F28 on a Whirlpool washer means communication has been lost between the main control board and the motor control unit (MCU). The MCU is a separate board that drives the motor. Before replacing boards, check the wiring harness connecting them — loose connectors cause this error.

What This Error Means

The main control board sends commands to the MCU over a communication line. F28 appears when that communication link fails — either a loose connector, a damaged wire, or one of the two boards has failed.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the machine and wait 60 seconds. Reconnect power. If F28 was a temporary glitch, this clears it.

  2. Access the boards. On most Whirlpool front-loaders, the main control board is at the top of the machine (under the top panel or in the control panel). The MCU is typically at the bottom, accessible via the front or rear lower panel.

  3. Reseat all connectors. Find the wiring harness that runs between the two boards — it’s typically a white or gray multi-pin connector. Disconnect and firmly reconnect it at both ends. Also reseat all other connectors on both boards.

  4. Inspect the harness for damage. Look for pinched, frayed, or broken wires. If you find damage, the harness needs repair or replacement.

  5. Replace the MCU if connectors are good. MCU failures are more common than main board failures on Whirlpool Duet and front-load washers.

When to Call a Technician

Identifying which board has failed (MCU vs. main) without test equipment can be difficult. If reseating connectors doesn’t fix F28, an appliance technician with a multimeter and schematic can isolate the failed component quickly.
