Whirlpool Range PF Error Code - Causes & Fix

4 min read

What this code means

On a Whirlpool range, PF stands for power failure. The electronic control board displays this code when it detects that power to the appliance was interrupted or lost momentarily. This can happen during a utility outage, a tripped breaker, or even a brief voltage dip on your home’s electrical supply. Whirlpool’s official documentation confirms that PF (including variants like PF id=27 or PF id=30 on some models) means there has been a power failure.

The code itself is not a fault, it is simply the control board telling you it had to reset. In most cases, pressing the Cancel button clears the display and the range resumes normal operation. Some models will also require you to reset the clock after clearing the code. If PF keeps coming back even when you know the power has not gone out, the underlying problem is usually a loose connection in the power supply path, unstable voltage reaching the appliance, or a failing control board that is overly sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

Before You Replace Anything

Homeowners sometimes replace the oven temperature sensor thinking it caused PF, but a bad sensor typically affects heating and will not trigger a power-failure code. Check the breaker, plug, and terminal-block connections before ordering any electronic parts.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Clear the display by pressing the Cancel button on the control panel. On some models you may also need to reset the clock after clearing PF.
  2. Reset power at the breaker for about one minute if the code does not clear or if you want to fully reboot the control board, then restore power and check whether PF returns.
  3. Inspect the power cord and plug at the wall receptacle for heat damage, corrosion, or looseness. If the plug feels warm or shows discoloration, the receptacle may need replacement by an electrician.
  4. Turn off the breaker and check the terminal-block connections at the back of the range. Verify that all three or four wire lugs are tight and free of corrosion. Tighten any loose screws on the terminal block.
  5. Measure incoming voltage at the terminal block with the breaker on. For a typical 240 V range, verify that L1 to neutral and L2 to neutral each read close to 120 V and that L1 to L2 reads about 240 V. If voltage is low or missing, the problem is upstream in your home’s wiring.
  6. Cycle the range burners and oven while watching the display. If PF appears only when high-draw elements are on, you may have voltage sag due to an undersized breaker, poor connections, or insufficient branch-circuit capacity.
  7. Replace the main control board if all power-supply checks are normal but PF continues to return. The control is likely detecting phantom power interruptions or has suffered internal damage from a prior voltage event.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Main control board (electronic clock control)Amazon | The board that generates the PF message. Replace only after verifying all incoming power and wiring are correct.
Range power cordAmazon | If the existing cord shows heat damage, corrosion, or the plug does not fit snugly in the receptacle.
Terminal blockAmazon | Rarely needs replacement unless the lugs are cracked or melted. More often you simply need to clean and tighten the existing block.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if the PF code returns after you have cleared it and checked the breaker. Diagnosing the root cause requires measuring line voltage at the terminal block with a multimeter while the range is under load, and that work must be done with the breaker on and exposed high-voltage connections. A technician will verify that your home’s supply wiring, breaker, and receptacle are delivering stable 240 V power, and will test the control board’s response to voltage fluctuations. If the terminal-block connections are corroded or the control board needs replacement, a pro has the tools and safety training to make those repairs correctly. You should also call a pro if you are uncomfortable working inside the back panel of the range or if local code requires a licensed electrician for any appliance wiring work.
