Whirlpool F3 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F3 means oven temperature sensor fault. Most often fixed by replacing the oven temp sensor. Also check wiring and control board.

Whirlpool F3 Error Code — What It Means

The F3 error on a Whirlpool range signals a temperature-sensing fault in the oven system. The exact issue depends on the suffix: F3 E0 indicates a problem with the oven temperature sensor, control board, or associated wiring. F3 E2 adds the warming drawer sensor (if your model has one) to that fault path. While many technicians shorthand this to a bad oven sensor, Whirlpool’s documentation confirms the control and wiring are also possible causes.

In practice, a failed oven temperature sensor is the most common culprit. Loose or damaged sensor wiring and connectors come next. If the fault returns immediately after a power reset and the sensor tests good, the electronic control board is usually the problem.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Reset power at the circuit breaker by switching it off for one full minute, then restore power and observe whether the code returns immediately or stays clear.
  2. Inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for burned insulation, loose terminals, or poor seating at the harness connector on the back of the oven cavity.
  3. Test the oven temperature sensor by disconnecting it and measuring resistance across the sensor terminals with a multimeter, then compare the reading to your model’s specification table (consult your service manual or tech sheet for the exact resistance at room temperature).
  4. Replace the oven temperature sensor if the resistance is out of range, reads open, or fluctuates when you wiggle the probe.
  5. Check the warming drawer sensor (F3 E2 models only) by disconnecting and testing it the same way you tested the oven sensor, and replace if defective.
  6. Replace the electronic control board if the sensor and all wiring test normal but the fault code persists or returns immediately after every power reset.
  7. Clear the code and test by running the oven through a bake cycle and verifying stable temperature without the fault reappearing.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Oven temperature sensor probeAmazon | Match the sensor to your exact Whirlpool model number for correct connector and length.
Warming drawer temperature sensorAmazon | For F3 E2 codes on ranges equipped with a warming drawer.
Electronic oven control boardAmazon | Replace only after confirming sensor and wiring are intact and testing correctly.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with live 240-volt wiring or removing the range back panel to access the sensor and control. Also call if the fault returns after you have replaced both the sensor and control board, since intermittent harness faults inside the range chassis require systematic tracing. If your range is still under warranty, contact Whirlpool or an authorized service center before opening the appliance to preserve coverage.
