Whirlpool Range F2 E0 Error Code — What It Means

F2 E0 on a Whirlpool range or oven indicates the electronic control has detected a shorted or stuck key in the user interface or keypad. Whirlpool’s own product help identifies the user interface, keypad, control board, and associated wiring as the likely fault areas. This code typically appears when a button is physically stuck, when moisture or food residue has penetrated the keypad membrane, or when the ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board has failed.

In the field, technicians most often find a stuck or shorted keypad membrane caused by a physically jammed button, moisture intrusion, sticky residue, or internal keypad failure. Less commonly, the ribbon cable or connector between the keypad and control board may be cracked, contaminated, or poorly seated. If both the keypad assembly and wiring check out, the electronic control board itself can be defective.

Before You Replace Anything

Many people replace the electronic control board first without inspecting the keypad or ribbon cable. Always disconnect, inspect, and reseat the ribbon connector and test a new user interface before replacing the control board.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the error clear after you power the range off at the circuit breaker for one minute and then restore power?
Yes: The fault may have been a temporary short caused by moisture or static. Monitor the range and check for sticky residue or moisture around the keypad. If the code returns, proceed to inspect the ribbon cable and keypad.
No: The short is persistent. Proceed to disconnect power and inspect the user interface ribbon connector and keypad assembly for physical damage, contamination, or poor seating.
Can you see or feel any stuck, sticky, or depressed buttons on the control panel?
Yes: A stuck button is likely causing the fault. Clean around the button or replace the user interface assembly. Do not attempt to pry or force the button as this can worsen the short.
No: The short is likely internal to the keypad membrane or in the ribbon cable. Disconnect and inspect the ribbon connector for cracks, bent pins, or contamination before replacing the user interface.
After you disconnect and reseat the ribbon cable at the control board, does the error return immediately when you restore power?
Yes: The keypad membrane or ribbon cable is shorted. Replace the user interface assembly. If a new UI does not clear the fault, replace the electronic control board.
No: The fault was caused by a poor connection. Monitor the range. If the code returns, replace the user interface assembly.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker and wait at least one minute to allow the control to reset.
  2. Restore power and observe whether the F2 E0 code returns immediately. If the code does not return, monitor the range and check for moisture or sticky residue on the keypad.
  3. Remove the control panel by taking out the screws securing the top or front overlay (consult your model’s service manual for exact fastener locations).
  4. Disconnect the ribbon cable from the electronic control board by releasing the locking tab or connector clip and gently pulling the ribbon straight out.
  5. Inspect the ribbon cable and connector for cracks, bent or corroded pins, contamination, or poor seating. Clean the ribbon edge and connector contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth if any residue is present.
  6. Reseat the ribbon cable firmly into the control board connector, restore power, and test. If the fault clears, reassemble and monitor. If the fault persists, replace the user interface assembly.
  7. Replace the user interface or keypad assembly if cleaning and reseating do not resolve the fault. If a new user interface does not clear the code, replace the electronic control board.

Parts Often Needed

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with the range’s internal wiring or removing the control panel, or if you have replaced both the user interface and the electronic control board and the F2 E0 code still appears. A technician can perform advanced diagnostics on the control board input circuits and wiring harness. Also call a pro if the range shares a high-voltage circuit with other appliances and you are unsure how to safely disconnect power at the breaker.

Rough cost: DIY runs about $80-180 in parts (user interface), 30-60 min. A pro service call runs about $150-300.
