Whirlpool Microwave Turntable Not Turning — What’s Happening

When your Whirlpool microwave turntable stops spinning, it means the glass tray is not rotating during cooking. This is a functional symptom, not a fault code. You may also hear a thumping or rumbling sound if the turntable is installed incorrectly or the support roller assembly is not operating properly.

On some Whirlpool models, the turntable can be intentionally turned off for manual cooking or to fit large plates. Before assuming a mechanical failure, verify that the rotation setting was not disabled through the control panel.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify power is removed by unplugging the microwave before opening the cabinet or accessing internal components.
  2. Inspect the glass tray installation and confirm the tray is seated correctly on the support hub and right side up.
  3. Inspect the roller ring and support assembly for missing wheels, binding, warped parts, or debris under the tray path and clean thoroughly.
  4. Check the turntable setting in the control panel or owner’s manual and turn rotation back on if it was disabled.
  5. Remove the lower access panel to expose the turntable motor underneath the cavity floor.
  6. Disconnect the motor and use a multimeter to check for continuity across the motor windings.
  7. Test for supply voltage at the motor leads during operation (one Whirlpool model showed approximately 24 V AC, but this is model-specific).
  8. Replace the motor if voltage is present at the leads but the motor does not run, or replace damaged support or roller parts if they are binding or broken.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are uncomfortable removing the lower access panel, testing electrical components with a multimeter, or replacing the turntable motor. Microwaves contain high-voltage capacitors that can store a dangerous charge even when unplugged. A technician can safely discharge the capacitor, verify motor supply voltage, and install the correct replacement motor for your model.
