Whirlpool Dryer PF Error Code — What It Means

The PF code stands for power failure. Your Whirlpool dryer detected that the drying cycle was interrupted by a loss or disturbance of electrical power. This can happen after an outage, a breaker trip, or if the control detected incorrect voltage or electrical noise on the supply during power-up. Whirlpool also notes that pressing buttons too soon during the 10-second power-up delay can trigger the PF display.

In most cases this is an informational code, not a component failure. The dryer is simply reporting that power was interrupted and the cycle did not finish. If power is now stable, you can clear the code and resume normal operation.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Clear the code first. Touch and hold the START button to restart the cycle, or press POWER to clear the display and cancel the cycle.
  2. Check for a recent outage or breaker event. Ask whether power was interrupted in the home, or look at clocks and other appliances for signs of a brief outage.
  3. Reset the dryer breaker. If a breaker trip or power event occurred, turn the dryer circuit breaker off for one full minute, then turn it back on and wait another minute to see if PF reappears.
  4. Inspect the power cord and receptacle. Unplug the dryer and check the cord terminals, plug blades, and outlet contacts for looseness, heat discoloration, or damage. Tighten any loose connections and replace damaged cords or receptacles.
  5. Verify incoming power if the fault repeats. If PF continues to appear without a known outage, contact a qualified electrician to measure supply voltage and check for wiring faults or electrical noise at the receptacle.
  6. Run a test cycle. Once power is confirmed stable and connections are secure, start a short timed-dry cycle and observe whether the dryer completes it without displaying PF.
  7. Monitor for intermittent faults. If the code appears sporadically, note the time and any household electrical events (other appliances starting, lights dimming) to help identify the source of the interruption.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Dryer power cordAmazon | Replace if terminals are burned, insulation is cracked, or plug blades are loose or corroded. Confirm wire gauge and plug type match your outlet.
Wall receptacle (dryer outlet)Amazon | If contacts are burned or loose, have a qualified electrician replace the receptacle with a matching rated unit (typically 30 A, 240 V).

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the PF code returns repeatedly even after you have verified stable power and secure connections. If the dryer was recently installed and PF appears frequently, Whirlpool specifically recommends that a qualified electrician verify the electrical supply. Also call if you are uncomfortable working with 240-volt circuits, if you see signs of arcing or heat damage at the outlet or cord, or if the dryer will not clear the code and resume normal operation after following the steps above.
