Whirlpool Dryer Felt Drum Seal Replacement - Signs & How-To

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Worn felt drum seal causes lint buildup, rubbing noise, and longer dry times. Replacing the seal restores the drum-to-bulkhead airflow path.

Whirlpool Dryer Felt Drum Seal Replacement — What This Part Does

The felt drum seal is a flexible ring or strip that sits at the edge of the drum and seals it against the stationary cabinet or bulkhead. It keeps air and lint flowing through the correct path and helps center the drum so it spins smoothly. Normal wear, heat, and lint contamination break down the felt and the adhesive bond over time. When the seal peels, disintegrates, or lifts off the drum lip, air leaks past the drum edge and lint escapes into the cabinet. You also lose drying efficiency and may hear rubbing or scraping as the drum rides out of position.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer and shut off any gas supply if equipped.
  2. Access the drum by removing the dryer top, front panel, or rear bulkhead (depending on your model) so you can determine whether the seal is front or rear.
  3. Disconnect the belt from the motor pulley and idler, then lift the drum out of the cabinet.
  4. Inspect the old felt seal for peeling, tears, or adhesive failure and note where it sits on the drum lip.
  5. Use a putty knife to scrape all old felt and adhesive residue off the drum lip until it is clean and smooth.
  6. Position the new felt seal around the drum lip in the correct orientation for your model and hold it in place with spring clamps or similar.
  7. Apply adhesive in sections (if your kit includes it), working around the seal and clamping each section to hold the bond.
  8. Leave the clamps in place for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to cure fully before you reassemble the dryer.
  9. Reinstall the drum, loop the belt around the motor pulley and idler, replace the bulkhead or front panel, and restore power, then run a test cycle to verify there is no scraping or air leakage.

When to Call a Pro

If the drum does not spin freely after you install the new seal, or if you find worn drum bearings, damaged support rollers, or belt damage during disassembly, call a technician to inspect the drum support system. A misaligned drum or bad bearing will stress the new seal and cause premature failure again. Professional diagnosis also helps on models with complex bulkhead access or when you see heavy lint buildup in the blower housing that needs cleaning at the same time.
