Whirlpool Dryer Drum Roller Replacement - Signs & How-To

Whirlpool Dryer Drum Roller Replacement — What This Part Does

The drum support rollers mount underneath or at the rear of the dryer drum and carry its weight while it spins. The drum rides on these rollers (and their metal shafts) instead of dragging on the cabinet floor. Over years of use, the rubber or nylon roller surface wears down, the bearing inside the roller can fail, or the metal shaft itself can develop grooves and flat spots.

When the rollers or shafts wear out, the drum no longer turns on a smooth bearing surface. You hear rumbling, knocking, or squealing because metal-on-metal contact or an uneven roller surface creates vibration and friction. The drum may also spin roughly or hesitate during tumbling. Replacing both the worn rollers and any damaged shafts restores quiet, smooth drum rotation.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or shut off power at the breaker before starting any work.
  2. Remove the lint screen, then use a putty knife or screwdriver to release the top panel clips and lift the top up and back (or remove screws securing the top).
  3. Disconnect any wire harnesses to the door switch or control panel, then remove the front panel screws (usually inside the door opening and along the top edge) and lift the front panel off.
  4. Note the belt routing around the drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley, then release tension on the belt by pushing the idler pulley toward the motor and slip the belt off the motor pulley.
  5. Lift the drum straight up and out of the cabinet, threading the belt out with it, and set it aside on a clean surface.
  6. Locate the drum support rollers at the rear of the cabinet (or underneath, depending on model), then use needle-nose pliers to remove the tri-ring or retaining clip from the center of each roller.
  7. Slide each roller off its shaft and inspect the shaft for wear grooves or flat spots (if the shaft is worn, remove the shaft mounting bracket screws and replace the shaft as well).
  8. Slide the new roller onto the shaft (with any spacers or washers in the original order), then reinstall the retaining clip so it seats fully in the shaft groove.
  9. Set the drum back into the cabinet with the belt looped under it, route the belt around the motor pulley and idler pulley in the original path, then reinstall the front panel, reconnect wire harnesses, replace the top panel, and restore power to test for smooth, quiet operation.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Drum support rollerAmazon | Check your dryer model and serial number (on the door opening or rear panel) to find the correct roller. Common Whirlpool part numbers include 349241T, WPW10314173, and W10314171. Many models use a two-roller kit.
Drum roller shaftAmazon | Inspect the existing shaft for wear grooves or flat spots. If damaged, order the matching shaft for your model (often sold separately or as part of a roller kit).
Tri-ring retaining clipAmazon | Usually included with a new roller. Reuse the old clip only if it is not bent or weakened.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable removing the drum or working inside the dryer cabinet, call a technician. Also call a pro if you find additional wear on the drum glides, felt seals, or belt during disassembly, or if the drum continues to make noise after roller replacement (which may point to a bad drum bearing, motor mount, or blower wheel issue). For Whirlpool models with rear-mounted rollers that require special bracket removal or complex belt routing, professional service can save time and prevent incorrect reassembly.
