Whirlpool Dryer Rear Drum Bearing Replacement - Signs & How-To

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Grinding noise, squealing, drum wobble, or rubbing during rotation mean the rear drum bearing is worn. Replacing the support bearing kit and related wear parts restores smooth, quiet operation.

Whirlpool Dryer Rear Drum Bearing Replacement — What This Part Does

The rear drum bearing is a mechanical support part at the back of the drum that lets the drum rotate smoothly and stay centered while clothes tumble. It carries the load of the rotating drum and keeps the assembly aligned so the drum does not rub the cabinet or run off-center.

The bearing fails from long-term rotation and drum load wearing down the surface or breaking the support tabs and clips on the plastic ring assembly. Worn drum glides, rollers, or seal components can create extra friction or let the drum run off-center, which accelerates bearing wear. Improper drum installation after a prior repair can also make the drum rub or not ride correctly on the support.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker to disconnect all power before starting any repair work.
  2. Remove the dryer top and front panels as required for your model to access the drum and support assembly (you may need to remove lint-duct connections and cabinet screws).
  3. Support the drum with your hand or a block and release the belt tension by pushing the idler pulley toward the motor, then lift the belt off the motor pulley and remove it from the drum.
  4. Lift the drum out of the cabinet carefully, noting the position of any front seal, glide strips, or bearing surfaces so you can reassemble them correctly.
  5. Inspect the old rear drum bearing or support ring for cracks, broken tabs, worn surfaces, or loose clips, and remove the old bearing kit from the drum tabs or mounting openings.
  6. Press the new support ring bearing kit into the drum openings or onto the mounting tabs until all clips or tabs snap into place and the bearing sits flush and secure.
  7. Check the condition of the belt, idler pulley, drum rollers and shafts (where equipped), and front drum seal or glide components, and replace any parts that show wear or damage.
  8. Set the drum back into the cabinet with the new bearing seated correctly on the support shaft or center post, reinstall the front seal or glides in their locator slots, and loop the belt around the drum and motor pulley with correct idler tension.
  9. Rotate the drum by hand to confirm it spins freely, sits centered without wobble or rub, and the belt tracks properly, then reassemble all panels and restore power to test the dryer under load.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Whirlpool dryer rear drum bearing kit (ring bearing kit / support ring bearing kit)Amazon | Check your dryer’s model and serial number on the door rim or rear panel and cross-reference it with Whirlpool OEM parts listings to confirm the correct bearing kit design (ring-style or bearing assembly) for your specific model.
Whirlpool dryer drum maintenance kit (drum rollers, idler pulley, belt, glides)Amazon | Many techs replace companion wear parts at the same time since the drum is already out, which prevents a second tear-down for parts that fail shortly after the bearing repair.
Whirlpool dryer front drum seal and bearing assembly (where applicable)Amazon | Some Whirlpool dryer designs use a front drum seal and bearing part in addition to or instead of a rear ring bearing kit, depending on the model configuration.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable disassembling the dryer cabinet, supporting the weight of the drum during removal, or correctly routing the belt and tensioning the idler pulley during reassembly, call a qualified appliance technician. A pro can also inspect for related wear that may not be obvious (worn drum rollers, misaligned shafts, or damaged cabinet supports) and replace all needed parts in one visit to prevent repeat failures.
