Whirlpool Dryer Drive Belt Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

If your Whirlpool dryer motor runs but the drum won't turn, the drive belt has likely snapped or slipped off. Replacing it restores tumbling.

Whirlpool Dryer Drive Belt Replacement — What This Part Does

The drive belt is a 93 1/2-inch, 4-rib, 3-groove belt that wraps around the drum and loops through the idler pulley and motor pulley. Its job is to transfer the motor’s rotation to the drum so clothes tumble during the dry cycle.

When the belt breaks, stretches, or slips off the pulley path, the motor will still run but the drum stays still. Age, abrasion, and improper tension or routing all cause belt failure. A worn or damaged belt may snap completely or walk off the motor pulley, leaving it lying in the bottom of the cabinet.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet before starting any service work.
  2. Pull out the lint filter and remove the screws securing the top panel (usually two screws in the filter opening).
  3. Slide a putty knife into the front edge of the top panel to release the retaining clips, then lift the top open or prop it up.
  4. Disconnect the door switch wire harness if necessary, then remove the screws holding the front panel and lift the front panel off to expose the drum and belt area.
  5. Inspect the old belt to confirm whether it is broken, off the pulley, or lying in the cabinet bottom, and check that the idler pulley moves freely.
  6. Wrap the new belt around the drum with the ribbed side facing in against the drum surface, then lift the drum slightly and thread the belt around the idler pulley and motor pulley in the correct routing path.
  7. Lower the drum back into place, ensuring the belt stays seated on all three pulleys, then reinstall the front panel, reconnect the door switch harness, and lower the top panel.
  8. Replace all screws, including those in the lint filter opening, then slowly rotate the drum by hand several full turns to verify the belt tracks correctly and does not pop off.
  9. Plug the dryer back in and run a short test cycle to confirm the drum tumbles normally.

When to Call a Pro

If the new belt slips off repeatedly, the idler pulley or motor pulley may be worn or misaligned and require replacement. If the drum binds or makes grinding noises even with the new belt installed, the drum bearings or glides may be damaged. Call a technician if you are uncomfortable disassembling the front and top panels or if the belt routing path is unclear after opening the cabinet.
