Weil-McLain E03 Error Code — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Weil-McLain error code E03 means, why the third ignition attempt fails, and how to diagnose and restore ignition.

Weil-McLain E03 Error Code — What It Means

E03 on a Weil-McLain boiler indicates ignition failure — specifically, the boiler control made three consecutive ignition attempts and did not detect a stable flame on any of them. After the third failed attempt, the control locks out and displays E03. This lockout prevents gas from continuing to purge into the combustion chamber without ignition. The boiler will not restart without a manual reset.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Reset the boiler — Press the reset button on the boiler control (typically a red button on the face of the control module). This clears the E03 lockout and initiates a new ignition sequence. Watch the attempt carefully.
  2. Observe the ignition sequence — During the trial for ignition, listen and watch for: inducer startup, spark or igniter energizing, gas valve opening, flame establishing. Identify at which step the sequence fails.
  3. Clean the flame sensor — Locate the flame sensor rod in the burner area. Remove it (one or two screws) and lightly polish the sensing rod with fine steel wool or emery cloth. Reinstall and retest.
  4. Verify gas supply — Confirm the manual gas shutoff valve before the boiler is fully open. If you have a gas pressure gauge, verify inlet pressure matches the boiler rating plate (typically 5–7” WC for natural gas at the manifold).
  5. Inspect the igniter — On spark ignition systems, check the spark electrode for correct gap (typically 1/8”) and insulator cracks. On hot surface systems, measure igniter resistance (open = failed).
  6. Check the flue for blockages — Inspect the vent pipe run for bird screens blocked with debris or ice. A restricted flue prevents proper combustion air flow and causes delayed or failed ignition.
  7. Reset the system — After repairs, press the reset button and confirm the boiler completes a full ignition sequence and runs to setpoint without re-locking.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Flame sensorAmazon | OEM or compatible; clean before replacing
Spark electrode / igniterAmazon | Check gap and insulator; replace if cracked
Gas valveAmazon | Replace only after pressure and wiring checks confirm valve failure
Boiler control boardAmazon | Replace if ignition sequence is correct but board still faults

When to Call a Pro

Gas supply issues, gas valve replacement, and combustion analysis require a licensed technician. Do not continue resetting a boiler that locks out repeatedly without identifying the root cause — accumulated gas is a serious hazard.
