Step-by-Step Fix
1. Let the Motor Cool
This is the only fix for most E1-1 occurrences. Turn the key off for 20-30 minutes. The drive motor needs to cool below the thermal sensor’s reset threshold. If the code clears and doesn’t return during the rest of the shift, the truck is fine.
2. Clean the Motor Ventilation
If E1-1 is happening regularly, the motor cooling passages are likely clogged. Toyota electric drive motors have ventilation openings on the rear end bell that pull cooling air through the motor. These passages pack with warehouse dust and fiber debris. Blow them out with compressed air — aim for 90 PSI at the motor end bell openings. A clean motor runs 30-40°F cooler.
3. Check the Cooling Fan
Some Toyota electric models have a dedicated motor cooling fan. Verify it spins freely and the fan blades are intact. A seized or broken fan eliminates forced-air cooling and will cause E1-1 within 15-20 minutes of continuous operation.
4. Test the Thermal Sensor
The thermal protection switch (thermostat-style, normally-closed) is embedded in the motor winding. Test continuity across the sensor wires with the motor cold: should show continuity (near 0 ohms). If the sensor shows open circuit (OL) on a cold motor, it has failed and needs replacement — the sensor is a generic thermal switch, about $25-40.
5. Check Motor Brushes
