STERIS Sterilizer Fault Codes - Quick Reference
STERIS makes the AMSCO steam sterilizers, V-PRO hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, and Gravity series for healthcare and laboratory use. Fault codes display on the touchscreen or LCD panel.
| Code | System | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| F01 | Steam | Steam supply fault | Check steam supply and traps |
| F02 | Temperature | Chamber temperature fault | Check temperature sensor |
| F03 | Pressure | Chamber pressure fault | Check pressure transducer |
| F04 | Door | Door seal or interlock fault | Check door gasket and mechanism |
| F05 | Drain | Drain temperature fault | Check drain trap and sensor |
| F06 | Air | Air supply fault | Check compressed air supply |
| F07 | Water | Water supply fault | Check water supply and solenoid |
| F08 | Cycle | Cycle abort - parameter out of range | Check cycle parameters |
| F09 | Printer | Printer paper or ribbon fault | Check printer paper/ribbon |
| F10 | Communication | Display/controller communication | Check controller wiring |
Most Common Faults
F01 - Steam Supply Fault
AMSCO steam sterilizers require clean, dry steam at the specified pressure (typically 50–80 psi). Steam supply faults occur from: low building steam pressure, failed steam supply solenoid valve, or wet/contaminated steam. Check the supply pressure gauge at the sterilizer inlet. Wet steam causes wet packs and sterilization failures.
F04 - Door Fault
Door faults on AMSCO sterilizers can mean the door gasket is not sealing, the door interlock mechanism didn’t confirm closed, or the door is obstructed. Inspect the door gasket for cracks, flat spots, or debris. Steam sterilizer gaskets should be replaced annually or as needed based on visual inspection.
F03 - Pressure Fault
Chamber pressure sensors (transducers) fail from steam condensate contamination or age. A pressure transducer reading out of expected range during a cycle causes F03 and aborts the cycle. Verify the transducer reads zero at ambient conditions and the correct pressure in the steam supply line.
F05 - Drain Temperature Fault
AMSCO sterilizers monitor drain temperature to ensure the steam trap is working correctly. A failed steam trap (stuck open) causes cold drain temperature and may allow active steam to escape to drain continuously. A failed drain temperature sensor gives a false F05.
V-PRO Faults
V-PRO hydrogen peroxide sterilizers have different fault codes related to the H2O2 cassette (empty, expired, inserted incorrectly), chamber humidity (humidity must be below threshold), and cycle aborts. Always verify cassette expiration date and correct insertion.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Door gasket (EPDM) | Amazon | Replace annually or on F04 |

When to Call a Pro
STERIS sterilizer qualification, IQ/OQ/PQ validation, and steam quality testing require biomedical engineers or STERIS-trained service technicians. Sterilizer failures in healthcare settings are a patient safety issue and must be resolved before the unit is returned to service.
