Samsung Washer tC Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

tC means the thermistor (temperature sensor) is faulty or disconnected. Check wiring at the heater and replace the thermistor if needed.

Samsung Washer tC Error Code — What It Means

The tC error code on a Samsung washer indicates a thermistor or temperature-sensing fault. The washer cannot get a reliable temperature reading from the sensor that monitors wash water temperature. This is not typically a heater failure code, but rather a problem with the temperature feedback circuit itself.

The thermistor is a small sensor that changes resistance with temperature. When it fails, becomes disconnected, or sends readings outside the expected range, the control board throws the tC code and may stop the cycle or skip heating. Some Samsung models group this with related codes like HC or TC1, all tied to the heater and thermistor circuit.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off water supply before starting any diagnostic or repair work.
  2. Access the heater and thermistor area by removing the front or rear service panel, depending on your model (front-load washers typically require front lower access, top-loads may need rear panel removal).
  3. Inspect all wiring and connectors at the heater assembly and at the main control board for looseness, corrosion, burn marks, or damaged pins, and reseat or clean connectors as needed.
  4. Check the thermistor physically to confirm it is clipped or inserted fully into its housing on the heater cover or assembly, and look for cracks or damage to the sensor body.
  5. Measure thermistor resistance using a multimeter and compare the reading to your model’s service manual specification (if open, shorted, or clearly out of range, the thermistor has failed).
  6. Run the washer diagnostic mode (if available on your model) to see if the tC code reappears immediately or only under certain conditions, which helps distinguish a hard failure from an intermittent wiring issue.
  7. Replace the thermistor or heater assembly if testing confirms the sensor is faulty, or replace the main control board if the sensor and all wiring test good but the code persists.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Thermistor / temperature sensorAmazon | Order the part specific to your washer model number, as sensor type and connector vary.
Heater assembly or heater cover assemblyAmazon | Required on models where the thermistor is integrated into or mounted with the heater unit.
Wiring harness (heater to control)Amazon | If connectors or wires are burned, corroded, or broken beyond repair.
Main control board / PCBAmazon | Only if thermistor, wiring, and heater all test good and the fault is confirmed to be at the board level.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working with electrical components or using a multimeter to check resistance and continuity, call a qualified appliance technician. Also call a pro if you have replaced the thermistor and checked all wiring but the tC code returns, since control board diagnosis and replacement require experience with the specific model’s service mode and correct part matching. If your washer is still under warranty, contact Samsung or an authorized service center before opening the machine.
