Samsung Refrigerator Fresh Food Warm but Freezer Cold — What’s Happening

When your Samsung refrigerator’s freezer is cold but the fresh-food compartment stays warm, the freezer is still producing cold air but that air is not reaching the refrigerator section. The system relies on a single evaporator (usually in the freezer) and a fan to push cold air through a damper into the fresh-food compartment. If the evaporator coils are buried in frost, the fan is stuck or failed, or the damper is closed, the fresh-food section will warm up while the freezer remains functional.

This symptom is not tied to a single error code across all Samsung models. Some units display 2 E or 2 C for a fresh-food thermistor fault, 21E for a freezer fan motor issue, or 22E for a fresh-food fan motor problem. Many times no code appears at all. Samsung troubleshooting guidance treats this as a cooling-performance issue that requires checking settings, airflow, seals, a power reset, and component service if the problem persists.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the complaint by confirming the freezer is cold and the fresh-food section is warm, then check that Cooling Off Mode is not enabled and temperature settings are correct.
  2. Inspect the interior vents in both compartments for blocked airflow from overloaded shelves or food items, and check that door gaskets seal cleanly all around.
  3. Power cycle the refrigerator by unplugging or turning off the breaker for two minutes, then restore power and allow the unit to reboot and run a self-test for error codes.
  4. Access the evaporator compartment (usually behind the rear freezer panel) and inspect for heavy frost or ice buildup on the coils and around the evaporator fan.
  5. Test the evaporator fan by listening for operation and feeling for airflow when the unit runs; if the fan is iced over, stalled, or silent, trace power and inspect the motor.
  6. Check the damper assembly in the fresh-food air path to confirm it opens and closes on demand; replace the damper if it is stuck closed or mechanically broken.
  7. Test the refrigerator thermistor resistance at the control-board harness (about 5 kΩ at 77°F on many Samsung models) to verify the reading the board actually sees, and repair any loose connectors or damaged wiring.
  8. If frost is present, manually defrost the evaporator, then test the defrost heater, defrost sensor or thermistor, and related control wiring per the service manual to prevent future ice buildup.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Samsung evaporator fan motorAmazon | Model-specific; verify part number from the service tag or wiring diagram before ordering.
Samsung damper control assemblyAmazon | Includes the door mechanism and sometimes a servo or solenoid; confirm fit by model number.
Samsung refrigerator thermistorAmazon | Typically around 5 kΩ at room temperature; match the original connector type.
Samsung defrost heaterAmazon | Used if evaporator frost is caused by a failed defrost cycle; verify wattage and mounting style.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable removing the evaporator cover, working with live 120 V circuits at the control board, or interpreting model-specific wiring diagrams. Professional service is also recommended if you find a sealed-system issue (compressor or refrigerant), if multiple error codes appear after the power cycle, or if frost returns quickly after manual defrost. A qualified tech has the tools to test thermistor circuits at the board, measure fan current draw, and access Samsung service documentation for your exact model.
