Samsung Refrigerator Freezer Not Freezing — What’s Happening

A Samsung refrigerator freezer that is not freezing means the freezer compartment is not reaching or holding the target temperature. This is a symptom, not a fault code. The freezer is either not getting enough cold air or cold air is not being retained in the compartment.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance treats this as a cooling issue and points first to settings, airflow, door sealing, and reset or service checks. The underlying problem is usually airflow restriction, defrost failure with ice buildup, door seal leakage, or a sealed-system or compressor problem if both compartments are warm.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify whether only the freezer is warm or both the fridge and freezer are warm, because that changes the fault path.
  2. Check the control panel settings to confirm the freezer temperature is set correctly and Cooling Off Mode is not enabled.
  3. Inspect the door gaskets for damage or gaps and perform a paper test by closing the door on a sheet of paper, which should show slight resistance when pulled out if the seal is working.
  4. Check for airflow obstructions inside the freezer and confirm food is at least 2 inches clear of the interior vents.
  5. Inspect the evaporator area for ice buildup by removing the back panel inside the freezer, and if iced over, manually defrost the unit and then determine why the defrost system failed to clear the frost.
  6. Test the evaporator fan motor for operation and obstruction by listening for fan noise when the door is open or checking for 12 VDC supply if you have a multimeter.
  7. Inspect the defrost system components including the defrost heater and sensor or thermostat, and clear the drain system if the evaporator area or drain pan shows ice or water accumulation.
  8. If the freezer still will not freeze and both compartments are warm, verify whether the compressor is running and whether the issue points to a sealed-system fault, which requires refrigerant-side diagnosis by a qualified technician.

Parts You Might Need

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you find heavy ice buildup on the evaporator and the defrost system needs diagnosis or replacement, or if both the fridge and freezer are warm and the compressor or sealed system is suspected. Sealed-system problems require refrigerant-side diagnosis including high-side and suction pressure checks, which must be done by a qualified technician with the proper equipment and EPA certification. Also call a pro if you are not comfortable working with electrical components or accessing the evaporator area behind interior panels.
