Samsung Refrigerator Compressor Replacement — What This Part Does
The compressor is the pump in your refrigerator’s sealed refrigeration system. Samsung refrigerators use inverter-driven compressors with automatic RPM control to circulate refrigerant and maintain cooling. When the compressor or its inverter control fails, the unit stops cooling or runs abnormally.
Compressor failure can be caused by mechanical wear, electrical winding burnout, inverter board failure, or sealed-system contamination. Wiring problems, refrigerant leaks, or restrictions can also prevent the compressor from operating properly. Because this repair requires brazing, evacuation, and refrigerant handling, most technicians treat compressor replacement as a sealed-system job.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- No cooling in both compartments The refrigerator and freezer are warm or at room temperature because the compressor is not pumping refrigerant.
- Compressor won’t start or run You hear clicking or relay noise but the compressor never runs, or it runs very briefly and shuts off.
- Abnormal compressor noise or vibration Loud grinding, rattling, or knocking from the compressor area indicates internal mechanical failure.
- Compressor overheats or trips breaker The compressor housing is extremely hot to the touch or the unit repeatedly trips the circuit breaker.
- Intermittent or inconsistent cooling The refrigerator cools for a while, then stops, or temperatures vary widely because the compressor cycles incorrectly.
- Condenser or evaporator fans run but no cold air Both fans operate normally but the compartments stay warm, pointing to a compressor or sealed-system problem.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet and shut off the water supply line if equipped with an ice maker or water dispenser.
- Pull the unit away from the wall to access the rear panel and compressor compartment at the bottom back of the refrigerator.
- Remove the rear lower access panel or compressor cover by unscrewing the fasteners and lifting the panel away.
- Verify the compressor is the failed component by testing winding continuity and resistance with a multimeter, and check that the inverter board is supplying power to the compressor terminals.
- Recover the refrigerant from the sealed system using a refrigerant recovery machine before cutting or unbrazing any lines.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the compressor and inverter board, then unbolt the compressor mounting bolts and cut or unbraze the suction and discharge tubing to remove the old compressor.
- Install the new compressor in the mounting bracket, reconnect the wiring, and braze or solder the suction and discharge lines to the new compressor, then install a new filter drier and service valve on the system.
- Evacuate the sealed system with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture, hold vacuum for at least 30 minutes, then charge the system with refrigerant by weight according to the nameplate specification.
- Reinstall the rear access panel, plug in the refrigerator, restore water if applicable, and monitor the compressor for proper startup and cooling performance over the next 24 hours.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Samsung refrigerator inverter compressor | Amazon | Compressor part numbers are model-specific. Find your exact model and serial number on the label inside the refrigerator or on the left interior wall, then order the matching compressor assembly for your unit. |
| Filter drier | Amazon | Required sealed-system component that must be replaced whenever the compressor or refrigerant lines are opened to prevent contamination. |
| Refrigerant and service valve | Amazon | Refrigerant type and charge weight are listed on the refrigerator nameplate. A service valve is needed for evacuation and recharge access. |

When to Call a Pro
Compressor replacement requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling, brazing or soldering skills, a vacuum pump, recovery equipment, and a refrigerant scale. The sealed system must be properly evacuated and charged by weight to avoid poor cooling or compressor damage. If you are not trained and equipped for sealed-system work, call a licensed appliance technician or HVAC contractor. Inverter board diagnosis and wiring checks also require electrical testing experience, and mistakes can damage expensive control boards or create safety hazards.
