Samsung C-21 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

C-21 means your Samsung range detected dangerous overheating in the oven. Most often a faulty temperature sensor or blocked vents.

Samsung C-21 Error Code — What It Means

The C-21 error code on a Samsung range signals an over-temperature safety fault. The appliance has detected that the oven cavity or its temperature-control system has exceeded safe limits and has shut down to prevent damage or fire risk. Internal shutdowns typically occur when the oven exceeds approximately 500–600°F (260–315°C), well above normal baking or broiling temperatures.

This is not a touch-panel or communication error. It is a hard safety interlock triggered by real or perceived overheating. The code will persist until the root cause is corrected and the range is reset.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power off the range at the circuit breaker for at least 60 seconds, then restore power to clear any transient fault and confirm whether the code returns during the next bake cycle.
  2. Inspect and clean all oven vents, especially the rear and upper openings, removing any grease buildup, dust, or obstructions that could trap heat inside the cavity.
  3. Locate the oven temperature sensor, typically a metal probe mounted inside the rear wall of the oven cavity, and disconnect it from the control board.
  4. Measure the sensor resistance with a multimeter at room temperature and compare the reading to the specification table for your exact Samsung model (consult your service manual or parts diagram).
  5. Check the sensor wiring harness and connectors for signs of heat damage, melted insulation, corrosion, or loose pins between the sensor and the main control board.
  6. Test the control board and relay operation if the sensor and wiring are within spec, looking for a stuck relay or failed triac that prevents the heating element from cycling off.
  7. Replace the failed component (sensor, wiring, or control board), reassemble the range, and run a full bake cycle to verify the oven reaches setpoint and holds steady without triggering C-21.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Oven temperature sensor (NTC thermistor)Amazon | Match the sensor to your exact Samsung range model number, which is printed on the rating label inside the oven door or on the rear panel.
Main control board or relay assemblyAmazon | Required if the sensor tests good but the relay or board logic fails to stop heating, order by full model and serial number.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working inside 240-volt appliances, if multimeter testing is unfamiliar, or if the error returns after you have cleaned vents and replaced the sensor. Control-board diagnosis requires live-circuit measurements and knowledge of relay operation. A qualified appliance repair tech will carry the correct test equipment, have access to model-specific resistance tables, and can order and install Samsung OEM parts under warranty if your range is still covered.
