Samsung Oven E28 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E28 means a shorted oven temperature sensor. Most likely fix: replace the sensor after checking wiring for damage or shorts.

Samsung Oven E28 Error Code — What It Means

The E28 error code on a Samsung oven indicates a shorted oven temperature sensor or thermistor. The control board sees the sensor resistance below the normal operating range and interprets this as a short circuit in the sensor or its wiring. In practical terms, the sensor is reading less than approximately 930 Ω when it should be around 1080 Ω at room temperature. The oven will not heat properly or may shut down completely when this code appears. While the code points to the sensor, field experience shows the main control board can also be the true source of the fault even when all wiring and the sensor test normally.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the range completely before beginning any service work.
  2. Access the oven temperature sensor by removing oven racks and locating the sensor probe at the rear or side wall of the oven cavity, then inspect the sensor, connector, and wiring for visible damage, burns, pinched insulation, or loose connections.
  3. Disconnect the sensor connector and measure the sensor resistance with a digital multimeter at room temperature. A good sensor should read approximately 1080 Ω at 25 °C and should drop as you warm it gently with your hand.
  4. Replace the oven temperature sensor if it reads below 930 Ω at room temperature, shows erratic readings, or does not respond to temperature change.
  5. Inspect the wiring harness for continuity and insulation damage along its entire length, especially where it passes through metal brackets or near heat sources, and repair or replace the harness if you find shorts or opens.
  6. Restore power and test the oven. If the E28 code returns immediately and the sensor and wiring test good, the main control board is likely faulty and must be replaced.
  7. Verify the error clears and the oven heats normally through a full preheat cycle before returning the unit to service.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Oven temperature sensor / thermistorAmazon | Match the part number to your exact Samsung range model. The sensor should measure around 1080 Ω at room temperature.
Main control board / electronic control boardAmazon | Required if the sensor and wiring test good but the code persists. Verify the board part number against your model before ordering.
Sensor wiring harnessAmazon | Needed if insulation is damaged, wires are pinched, or the connector is melted or corroded.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are not comfortable working with live voltage or disassembling the range control panel and oven cavity. If the error returns after you replace the sensor and verify the wiring is intact, the control board likely needs diagnosis and replacement, which requires model-specific programming and calibration in some Samsung ranges. Also call a pro if you find evidence of arcing, melted connectors, or repeated short circuits, since these conditions can indicate a deeper electrical fault that may be unsafe to troubleshoot without proper test equipment and training.
