Samsung Microwave C-72 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

C-72 means a steam sensor fault. First, unplug for 60 seconds and retry. If it returns, check for moisture, loose wiring, or a bad sensor.

Samsung Microwave C-72 Error Code — What It Means

Samsung groups C-70, C-71, and C-72 under “Error with Steam Sensor” in their official error code table. This code appears on Samsung microwaves equipped with steam-cooking features when the control board detects a problem in the steam sensor circuit. The fault can be a transient glitch, moisture intrusion around the sensor, a loose connector, a failed sensor, or in rare cases a defect on the main control board itself.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the microwave and leave it disconnected for at least 60 seconds, then restore power and test. Samsung’s reset procedure for this code often clears transient faults.
  2. Remove the outer cabinet panels following your model’s disassembly sequence to access the steam sensor, wiring harness, and main control board.
  3. Inspect for moisture or condensation around the steam sensor assembly, wiring connectors, and nearby circuit boards. Wipe dry any damp areas and allow the cavity to air-dry completely before re-testing.
  4. Check the steam-sensor harness for loose or corroded connectors. Disconnect and reconnect each plug to make sure a secure fit, and look for pushed-back pins or corrosion on the contacts.
  5. Test continuity and connection of the steam-sensor wiring from the sensor to the main board connector. If you find an open circuit or intermittent connection, repair or replace the affected harness or sensor.
  6. Replace the steam sensor if the wiring is intact but the code persists. Consult your model’s service manual for any resistance or voltage specifications before condemning the sensor.
  7. Replace the main control board only if the sensor, harness, and all connections test normal and the code returns immediately after power-up.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Steam sensorAmazon | Order by your microwave’s full model number to match the correct sensor assembly.
Steam-generator wiring harnessAmazon | Replace if you find damaged insulation, corrosion, or broken connector tabs.
Main control board / PCBAmazon | Only after confirming the sensor and wiring are good. Match the board part number exactly.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working around high-voltage capacitors and live circuits inside a microwave, call a qualified appliance technician. Microwaves store lethal voltage in the high-voltage capacitor even when unplugged, and improper discharge procedure can cause serious injury. Also call a pro if you have dried all moisture, verified all connections, and the code still returns after a sensor replacement, since diagnosing board-level faults requires a schematic and meter skills.
